Here’s some answers to some questions about the Canadian wireless fight that I’d like to answer:
Greetings IT Nerd. I agree with you that it the message that Rogers, Bell, and Telus is broadcasting isn’t having any impact with Canadians. The question I have is why?
Thanks for the question. I think there’s several reasons. For starters, Canadians don’t like the big telcos. After all, Canadians due to this battle that they have with Canadian government are now aware that the big three got spectrum in the 1980’s and 90’s basically for free. On top of that the perception is that they charge as much as market will bear and don’t exactly provide award winning service while raking in record profits quarter after quarter. Thus that makes them a group that isn’t going to find a lot of sympathy from Canadians when they are threatened by a foreign company that potentially could take their breakfast, lunch, and dinner from them.
Mr. IT Nerd. Why are you in favour of Verizon coming to Canada?
I’m hardly a mister but in answer to your question, I will say this. I could care less if it’s Verizon, AT&T or any other American carrier. It could be Orange, T-Mobile or some other big European carrier for that matter. Who shows up in Canada doesn’t really matter to me. I say let them all in. One or more of them will shake up the market and provide some desperately needed competition to the Canadian marketplace.
IT Nerd. Rogers has accused the government of courting Verizon. Do you think that’s true?
No, but I have to admit that when I read that comment that was made by Rogers here, I was taken aback. If it were true, it would really be shocking and problematic that any government would do that. Now the government has denied that this is the case, but I have to admit that if I were the Canadian government, I’d be calling my lawyers and sending them in to address this with Rogers.
Please keep the questions coming.
