Now that’s an interesting question.
Personally, they need someone who has the vision to come up with a coherent strategy that is able to transform the company, and be able to execute that strategy quickly and efficiently. Microsoft in the Bill Gates era talked about using the Internet for things like TV, music and the like. But Apple and Google have executed on that and Microsoft has missed the boat for the most part. This put Microsoft behind the 8 ball and resulted in things like eroding PC sales and $900 million in Surface tablet writedowns. Thus Steve Ballmer’s successor has to bring everything that I mentioned to the table if Microsoft is to survive.
Now, the next question is who is out there that has these qualities. I couldn’t tell you who the likely candidates might be. But my advice would be for Microsoft to look for someone like Lou Gerstner Jr. who led IBM’s transformation in the 1990’s. He a great benchmark for potential candidates as he encompasses all the qualities that they need.
