Hey IT Nerd! What’s The Point Of BlackBerry Posting An Open Letter?

I got this question in my inbox today.

A question for the IT Nerd. What is the point of BlackBerry posting an open letter in newspapers around the world? Why did they think that this would be a good idea and do you think that it will work for them? Also, don’t you feel as a Canadian that you need to support them in their time of need?

Thanks for the question. Quite simply, the reason they came out with this open letter is to change the channel from doom and gloom to one that presents the core reasons why the BlackBerry platform was, and still is to a degree popular. This they hope will keep things stable until a buyer is found and stop users from defecting to other phones. The other thing is that they hope to try and maybe win a few converts along the way. All of these are noble goals.

The problem is that I think that it’s too little too late.

They’re bleeding customers, the sale process isn’t going that well, and their public perception isn’t that great at the moment. In fact the company is seen as being in a terminal spin towards oblivion. Thus this this letter won’t make any different in my opinion.

As to the second question, do I feel that I need to support them because they’re a Canadian company and I am Canadian. In short, no. That sounds harsh, but if you’re a shareholder who bought in at $60 or $80 a share, your incentive to support this company is very low. Besides, I believe that whether a company should be support or not should come from the company making products that fit the needs of those who could be customers. Not from some sense of national pride.
