Volvo Starts Swedish Pilot Project With Self-Driving Cars On Public Roads

It sounds like science fiction, but it’s not. Volvo is starting a pilot project where self-driving cars will use public roads in everyday driving conditions around the Swedish city of Gothenburg. Here’s a snippet from the press release:

The ground-breaking project ‘Drive Me – Self-driving cars for sustainable mobility’ is a joint initiative between Volvo Car Group, the Swedish Transport Administration, the Swedish Transport Agency, Lindholmen Science Park and the City of Gothenburg.

The ‘Drive Me’ project is endorsed by the Swedish Government. The aim is to pinpoint the societal benefits of autonomous driving and position Sweden and Volvo Cars as leaders in the development of future mobility.

This is above and beyond anything I’ve ever heard of and could lead to a new era of driving. Imagine that through the long boring sections of your daily commute that you could use your tablet to get up to date on your activities or unwind after a hard days work for example. Not to mention make our roads a whole lot safer which is important to Volvo as they have a goal of no deaths in a Volvo by 2020. It doesn’t surprise me that Volvo is leading the way on this as they’ve been on the cutting edge of tech like this for some time. This is something that I’d love to see first hand personally. It sounds very impressive.
