Hey IT Nerd! What Do You Think Of Amazon’s Potential Use Of Drones?

This question refers to a revelation on last night’s episode of 60 Minutes where Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos revealed plans to use drones to deliver orders in about 30 minutes. I’ll let you watch the report so that you can see for yourself what Bezos has in mind. But here are my thoughts on this:

  • On one hand I recall seeing an interview with Bezos back in 2001 or 2002 where he said that we would be reading newspapers, books and magazines from a tablet like device. I don’t recall him actually using the word tablet, but that’s what he was describing. I thought it was a foolish statement at the time, but that’s exactly what we’re doing now. So I don’t doubt that he wants to do this as quickly as possible and that he’ll find a way to make it happen. Besides, the technology exists to make this happen today.
  • On the other hand, there are huge hurdles to make this happen. The FAA for one isn’t going to let a bunch of drones simply fly wherever they want to. Plus there likely have to be safeguards in place. For example, what if a drone drops out of the sky and hits a child and injures or kills them? What about the potential of dropping off a package at a home where nobody is home? I am sure I can come up with other things that make this completely impractical. There’s also one other thing that comes to mind. Today is Cyber Monday and could this be some sort of stunt to get Amazon mindshare?

In short, I’m going to take a wait and see attitude to this. I honestly don’t know how to read this, but it could be very much be worth watching as we could be seeing the future unfold in front of our eyes.
