iOS 8 Drops Today. Here’s How You Should Upgrade And Why You Might Want To Wait. [UPDATED]

So today is the big day that millions of iDevice users get the latest iteration of Apple’s mobile OS, iOS 8. But the question is, if you’re going to upgrade, how are you going to do it. Also should you wait for the inevitable iOS 8.0.1 to appear?

Let’s start with upgrading. The following devices can run iOS 8:

  • iPhone 4s
  • iPhone 5
  • iPhone 5c
  • iPhone 5s
  • iPod touch 5th generation
  • iPad 2
  • iPad with Retina display
  • iPad Air, iPad mini
  • iPad mini with Retina display.

If your iDevice is on this list, you’re good to go. Here’s what you should do next.

  1. Back up your device to your computer. That way if anything goes wrong, you have a fall back plan.
  2. Delete unwanted apps. I say that because they occupy space and the one thing that an iOS upgrade needs to be successful is space. The last major iOS update was 600MB+ and needed about 3GB free space. I don’t expect this one to be any different. So zap the apps that you don’t need to give your iDevice some extra space to work with.
  3. Delete unwanted photos and text/iMessage conversations. Again, this is to make sure that the iDevice has free space to accomplish the upgrade.
  4. Back up your device again as you cannot be too careful.
  5. Upgrade away. Some people prefer to do it via iTunes, but I did the iOS 7 and 7.1 updates over the air and they worked fine for me.

One tip for you. After the upgrade you’ll be asked to turn on iCloud Drive. Say no to that. The reason being is that it is only compatible with iOS 8 and Yosemite, so until Yosemite hits the streets next month, you won’t be able to sync your iPhone to your Mac. Don’t worry though, you’ll be able to turn it on later.

Now Apple can tell you all the reasons why you should update to iOS 8 (and if the iOS 7 update is anything to go by, break the Internet in the process). But here are a few reasons why you might want to wait:

  1. If you have an iDevice that is jailbroken on iOS 7.1 or below, you should avoid updating to iOS 8 in order to keep your device jailbroken.
  2. It’s a safe bet that iOS 8 will have a bug or two floating around. If you want something with more stability, wait until 8.0.1 to appear.
  3. You may have apps that haven’t been tested on iOS 8. In that case, you must avoid updating as an update of the app in question may be slow in coming.
  4. If your iDevice is work supplied, let your employer do the update for you. Sure it’s a safe bet that it won’t be today. But it will ensure that everything on your iDevice will work.

Finally, when does the fun start if you plan to upgrade? For iOS 7 and 7.1 it was 1PM EST. I expect it to be the same today.

If you have any additional tips or tricks, or you want to share your update experience, please leave a comment below. I’ll be posting a story later today with my update experience. Watch for it.

UPDATE: iOS 8 is available. It requires almost 6GB of storage free and it is a 1.1GB download. You have been warned.
