Apple Releases iOS 8.0.2…. Upgrade If You Dare

After yesterday’s iOS update fiasco, I was pretty sure that Apple was going to get an update before the end of the week. And they did get an update out tonight at 5PM PDT. So if you’re feeling brave, you can download iOS 8.0.2 which brings all the fixes that were in the ill fated 8.0.1 update plus fixes for the cellular and Touch ID problems experienced by iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users. Reports from my browsing of the Internet shows that this update appears to work. Though News.com.au is reporting that their iPhone 6 Plus is still broken. I’ve found scattered reports of people in the US in the same state. Thus, you’ve been warned.

Now there’s a subplot here before I tell you what my experience is with the update. Remember the Apple Maps fiasco? Well, the same QA manager that was behind that was apparently behind this. At least that’s what 9to5Mac is reporting. My guess is that he should be sharpening up his CV right about now. Another subplot, CNBC Tweeted this:

That sounds big, but it’s 0.4% for the 10 million phones that Apple sold last weekend. Though if you were one of that 0.4%, you were likely mad. Anyways, back to my update experience. I first updated my iPhone 5S. Nothing bad happened. I then updated my wife’s iPhone 5 and it worked on her phone as well. As for the WiFi issues that I’ve documented, I’ll have to get back to you on that as thus far it seems to be fine. But that’s what I said yesterday before discovering that it wasn’t fine.

Thus if you’re brave, download away and post your download experiences below. Oh, there’s one more thing. TechCrunch is reporting that Apple has apologized for this iFail.
