I just finished watching today’s Apple event and there’s a lot of stuff to recap, so let’s get right to it:
Mac Mini
Apple refreshed the Mac Mini today and dropped the price by $100. Here’s what you now get for your money:
- 4th-gen Intel Core processors
- Intel Iris and HD Graphics 5000
- PCIe-based flash storage
- 802.11ac Wi-Fi
- Two Thunderbolt 2 ports
- OS X Yosemite
They’re available today.
iMac with Retina 5K Display
This got my attention as Apple released an 27″ Mac with a 5K display. To put that in perspective, that’s 5x the resolution of your HDTV. Here’s what it comes with at the base level:
- 3.5GHz quad-core Intel i5 processor
- AMD Radeon R9 M290X graphics processor
- 8GB of RAM
- 1TB Fusion Drive
- OS X Yosemite
These are available today as well. It should be noted that the rest of the iMac lineup got some price adjustments as well.
iPad Mini 3 and iPad Air 2
The iPad Air 2 gets the A8X processor and the M8 motion co-processor along with a new camera and 802.11ac WiFi to make the iPad Air 2 rival desktop computers. The iPad Mini 3 doesn’t get the A8X, but it does get 1080p HD video recording, a 5 MP camera and 801.11n with MIMO wireless. Both models get Touch ID as well. Pre-orders start tomorrow with shipping starting next week.
OS X Yosemite is available today and iOS 8.1 will ship on Monday. OS X Yosemite will be available for free to all users with a computer that is capable of running it. iOS 8.1 will mark the return of the Camera Roll, which will make many iOS users happy. Also, Apple Pay will launch as well. At least in the USA. The rest of us will have to wait.
As always, there are likely to be subtle changes Apple has made to their product lineup. I’ll post those as I come across them.
UPDATE: A video of the event has been posted.
