Hacker Group Launches Cyber Attacks On Canadian Police Websites [UPDATED]

Something that is getting a lot of attention this morning is a cyber attack that’s aimed at the Ottawa and Toronto Police. The CBC has been running with this story and has details:

The Toronto Police Service’s website went offline Sunday after a Twitter user who claims to be connected with the hacker group Anonymous threatened to infiltrate it.

Toronto police confirmed the hack took place, but offered no further details. The website has since been restored.

The cyberattack comes on the heels of similar hacks on the websites for the City of Ottawa, Ottawa police and the Supreme Court of Canada over the weekend.

The reason for the hack is that the group behind it wants a Ottawa area person who was accused of dialing 911 services across North America to deploy SWAT teams, a practice known as “SWATTING” freed because they didn’t do the crime according to the Ottawa Citizen. It will be interesting to see how law enforcement reacts to this cyber attack as the person or people behind this have threatened more attacks if their demands aren’t met.

UPDATE: The Globe And Mail is reporting that the group behind this attack are “preparing a huge ‘bombshell’ right now that we will release in the next few hours, let’s just say – it will discredit the police forces” that will become public in the next few hours. If that does happen, I will update this post with any relevant news.
