HTC, excuse the pun, has a sense that it can get back into the smartphone game since rivals Samsung are having some issues at the moment. So today at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Spain which is the biggest event of the year for the mobile phone industry, they announced the One M9. Here’s the key specs:
- Android 5.0.2
- HTC Sense 7.0 Skin
- 20 MP rear camera up from the 4 MP seem the last time around with the M8
- 5-inch 1080p display
- Snapdragon 810 chipset
- 3GB of RAM
- 32GB of expandable internal storage
With the exception of the camera, this could be described as an evolutionary upgrade. Expect the usual suspects at Bell, Rogers, and Telus to have this phone. They haven’t e-mailed me to say so, but I know they will.
Two other things were announced by HTC today:
- HTC has teamed up with Under Armour to come out with the HTC Grip. It’s a a GPS-based fitness tracker with a small horizontal touch screen that counts activity from runs and bike rides, both when moving and stationary, uploading the results to UA Record, a network of millions of fitness fans that has iOS and Android support. The key thing here that this wearable works with or without a phone. It’s aimed at hard core athletes rather than “Joe Average.” Interesting move on HTC’s part. Expect to pay $199 for one when it ships this spring.
- HTC also announced Vive, a virtual reality headset designed and built in collaboration with Valve. HTC plans to release the Vive in a Developer Edition this Spring with a public release around Christmas. It looks interesting, but I don’t know what kind of traction it will get.
These announcements from HTC will keep people buzzing until Samsung does what everyone expects them to and announces the Galaxy S6 and whatever else they plan on bringing to the table.
