Last year, I posted a Father’s Day Gift Guide and it attracted a lot of attention. So I’m offering up some new gift ideas for dad:
Nikon has a bunch of cameras for dad, depending on the type of photographer he is.
For the adventurous dad: The durable COOLPIX AW130 is waterproof to 100ft/30m, shockproof to 7ft/2.1m, and freezeproof to 14F/-10C. Perfect for snorkeling, rock climbing or skiing, the AW130 shoots Full HD 1080p video and can record the longitude and latitude where images were captured. It’s also easy to control in almost any situation – Action Control lets users adjust camera settings with just the flick of a wrist, or photographers can use their smartphone to remotely trigger the camera when connected. The COOLPIX AW130 is available in three colours – blue, orange and yellow. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price: $379.95
For the world travelling dad: The Nikon 1 J5 offers DSLR-like photo quality and manual functions in a design that’s remarkably small and lightweight, perfect for the next family vacation. The Vari-angle LCD touchscreen makes it easy to compose shots from any angle. The J5 also introduces 4K video recording to the Nikon 1 Advanced Interchangeable Lens System, and practically eliminates shutter delay with the world’s shortest release time. It’s also compatible with Nikon’s range of full frame lenses with an optional FT-1 mount adapter. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price: $599.95
For the video enthusiast dad: The D7200 is Nikon’s first-ever HD-SLR with both built-in Wi-Fi and Near Field Communication (NFC), so it’s easy for dads to share family photos via their compatible smartphones and tablets. The D7200 features 30 per cent more image processing than its predecessor, the D7100, and provides an increased buffer capacity that now allows the camera to shoot 18 consecutive RAW 14-bit lossless compressed images, 27 12-bit compressed shots or 100 JPEG frames. It’s also fast enough to capture kids at play with 6 frames-per-second (fps) continuous shooting. The D7200 is also the first Nikon DX-format HD-SLR to feature a built-in Time Lapse Mode with exposure smoothing, making capturing a beautiful sunset time-lapse easier than ever. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price: $1,749.95 with 18-140mm VR lens, $1,399.95 body only
For the classic dad: For dads with an eye for timeless style and an appreciation for classic photography, the finely crafted Df pays homage to the design of Nikon’s illustrious “F” series of 35mm film cameras. It includes a feature set similar to the D4, with a 16.2-megapixel FX-format sensor that excels in low light. Mechanical dials for ISO and exposure compensation have a satisfying, tactile feel that tunes you in to the experience of photography and evokes classic cameras, in addition to the full manual controls Nikon photographers expect. The Df is available in a beautiful black-and-silver body with leather textures that’s both eye-catching and comfortable to hold. Not only is the Df compatible with all current NIKKOR lenses, but it also accommodates classic Ai and non-Ai NIKKOR glass. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price: $3,299.95
Next up is the Roku Streaming Stick for dad. It transforms any TV into a Smart TV and enables dads (and others) to stream popular channels such as Netflix, Google Play, Ace Pro Wrestling Network, Cineplex Store, and Jeopardy, on TV. There is more: Roku streaming players come with over 1,400 streaming channels so you never have to watch anything anymore on TV that you dislike! Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price: $59.95
If dad can’t get to sleep, try Bedgear. Its unique patent pending technology, combined with a “lifehacker’ philosophy, is designed to properly fit dad for the right pillow, mattress cover, or sheet, so one can fully experience the phenomenal differences a proper night sleep makes. You can help dad to stop snoring and have a better night sleep. All pillows are customized to meet his individual needs. Pillow types include back, side, and stomach sleeper options amongst others. Bedgear also offers a verity of mattress covers to aid in nighttime temperature control, and a verity of airflow enhancing performance sheets and pillow covers
Next up is the QODE Slim Style Keyboard Case for iPad Air 2 and iPad Air. With a premium feel and laptop-like typing experience, the QODE Slim Style gives dad a sleek, stylish and convenient case that offers maximum protection for his iPad. Innovative precise-hold magnets allow the iPad to easily release and attach so Dad can quickly switch tasks from typing a document to taking a family photo.
The NetCam HD+ lets Dad stay connected with the family whenever he’s away from home. Whether he is away on business or staying late at work, he will love the comfort and convenience of checking in on the family with 720p HD quality video and two-way audio from the secure WeMo app on his smartphone or tablet. I reviewed it here and I really liked it.
Where hi-def meets Hi-Fi, PLAYBAR is the perfect addition to Dad’s home theatre system. His favourite sports, movies and games will come alive with PLAYBAR’s nine individually-amplified speakers. And when the show’s over, PLAYBAR doubles as a stand-alone Hi-Fi music player, controlled with the free Sonos app on Dad’s smartphone or tablet. I reviewed it here and I was blown away by the sound quality.
Next up is the WeMo LED Lighting Starter Set. Using the free WeMo smartphone app, Dad can control and customize these energy efficient, fully dimmable LED bulbs. Turn the lights on/off, set them by time of day, or sunrise/sunset. With a 23-year lifespan, this is a gift that will keep on giving.
A great gift for Dad that will benefit the whole family, is the EA9200 Tri-Band AC3200 Smart Wi-Fi Router which is designed for today’s device-heavy households. With powerful tri-band technology, slowdowns will be a thing of the past, even when everyone’s streaming their favourite shows. And with Linksys’ Smart Wi-Fi apps, Dad can keep tabs on the home network from anywhere, accessing powerful parental controls, network prioritization, guest networks and more.
Finally, I’ll suggest the Chrysler 300C Platinum for dad and his driving habits. It’s American luxury at its best with a V8 Hemi under the hood to get dad from point A to point B quickly. I did a five part review of it here and you’ll see that this is one car that dad will love.
