The month of July is one of my favorite times of year. That’s because the most famous multi-day bike race is on. The Tour De France. For 21 days in July, the worlds best cyclists race over various terrain including the two big mountain ranges in France which are the Pyrenees and the Alps all the way to the finish in Paris in hopes of either winning the race overall, or just a single stage. One of the top contenders this year is Great Britain’s Chris Froome who won the race in dominating fashion two years ago. But at the time he was accused of using performance enhancing drugs because he simply rode away from his competition in the mountains in devastating fashion. No evidence was ever found, but that hasn’t stopped people from talking. This year, he’s in the lead and looks unstoppable heading into the crucial mountain stages. That may have lead to the computers of his cycling team being hacked. Here’s what his team told the BBC:
“We think someone has hacked into training data and got Chris’s files,” said Team Sky boss Sir Dave Brailsford.
“We’ve got some legal guys on the case. I would never mention a name but ethically and morally if you are going to accuse someone of doping, then don’t cheat.”
This episode follows a baseball team having their computers hacked by another baseball team. Though in that episode, there wasn’t much hacking going on. In this episode, it might be very different. But clearly there’s a trend here that some in the sporting world are resorting to using high tech “cheating” to get any advantage whatsoever.
Welcome to the 21st century.
