Bad news for the big six banks that won’t jump on board to the Apple Pay bandwagon. Apple Pay is gaining support.
The TTC is in the midst of rolling out is Presto fare readers, which began appearing on older generation vehicles this fall. Within the next few weeks, every streetcar in the city will accept Presto, opening electronic fare payment to a much wider audience.
“There are an awful lot of people that just travel on streetcars and from subway stations, so this is the stage where we will start to see more people using Presto,” said TTC spokesman Chris Upfold.
The Presto readers are already compatible with Apple Pay and other mobile payment technologies, including contactless credit and debit cards, but Upfold said there’s still work to be done behind the scenes before the features can be switched on.
Sort of encouraging. But not yet a game changer. However, this might be. Global Payments who is one of the larger payment processing services around is offering merchants Apple Pay support:
As an Apple Pay-qualified payment provider, Global Payments’ robust suite of payments solutions is fully enabled for Apple Pay acceptance, allowing merchants to offer their customers the convenience of Apple Pay acceptance in-store, in-app and on-the-go.
So, on top of Moneris offering Apple Pay, a whole lot of merchants in Canada support Apple Pay. The big six banks can’t ignore that. At least, not for long.
Apple Pay Support Grows In Canada
