The company that loves to break any and all laws that are aimed at it is at it again. This time Uber has launched UberHop in Toronto. This is basically a shot at mass transit systems as it a new commuting service which will operate on four downtown Toronto area routes. Passengers will pay a flat fee of $5.
Here’s the thing, mass transit services in Toronto are provided by the Toronto Transit Commission, and the City Of Toronto Act says only the Toronto Transit Commission can provide mass transit. Thus Uber is once again breaking the law. But just like with their taxi services, there is a lack of will to shut them down. Toronto Mayor John Tory has already gone on record as saying that he has no plans to shut UberHop down. Given that this comes on the heels of a massive taxi strike last week where cab drivers who are frustrated at the lack of will by Mayor Tory and Toronto City Council to shut down Uber basically shut down the downtown core of the city to express their frustration, you can bet that this will not go over well with cab drivers.
My thoughts? Mayor John Tory and Toronto City Council have failed the people of Toronto. They talk a good game, but they have delivered little if anything of substance when it comes to this issue. I don’t need a law degree to see that Uber is clearly breaking the law and the people who make the laws aren’t doing anything about it. So, one has to wonder if there has to be rioting in the streets before anything gets done as that’s what happened in Paris? Or, does it require a change in who leads the city of Toronto to get a company who’s business model is based on breaking the law off the streets?
