Hyundai “Welcome Lights” Fiasco Turns Ugly [UPDATED]

Those of you who follow this blog on a regular basis know that my wife and I recently bought a 2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited after doing a review and walking away impressed. The only issue that has cropped up that I documented in a follow up of my original review are non-functioning “welcome lights” which are LEDs in the door handles that come on when you approach the vehicle. It seems that Hyundai forgot to enable this feature for Tucsons made up to roughly September 2016. There’s a very lengthy discussion about this topic on a third party forum called the Hyundai Forms and apparently Hyundai has a fix for it that is rolling out to US customers as I type this. The fix involves installing a wiring harness in the vehicle which allows the lights to work. However, Canadian customers are yet to receive this fix and dealers have no clue that this is even an issue. Though I know that Hyundai Canada knows about this as they acknowledged it when I called them about it and I have a case number with them to track the issue.

But clearly the slow response from Hyundai Canada on this issue is starting to get on the nerves of Canadian Tucsons. One that goes by the name of “Semco” on the Hyundai Forums is doing the following:

I am going to write civil claim tonight and will send it to Hyundai Canada. If they will not respond my 2 concerns: welcome lights and door lights I will go to court. Seems 4 months to make it fix is more than enough.

In other words, he’s taking them to court. As an aside, he also mentions door lights in this post. The owners manual says that there should be lights in the front doors, but they are reflectors instead. It isn’t clear what should actually be there as nobody seems to know.”Semco” has also posted a template for Tucson owners to use so that they can take Hyundai Canada to court as well and he advocates also posting messages to Hyundai Canada’s  Facebook page for the following reason:

If we will seat and do nothing we won’t get anything

Besides the fact that I will be monitoring this as my wife and I are affected by this issue, I’m watching this to see what happens from a social media and PR perspective. That’s because the Tucson is an important vehicle for Hyundai Canada as the compact SUV market is huge in North America. This sort of negative press is something that could drive customers to other car companies and cast Hyundai Canada in a negative light just as they are gaining traction in the marketplace.

Expect updates on this as they come.

UPDATE: I’ve had my “welcome lights” fixed. Click here for details.
