In a very interesting move, Twitter is going to spend $10 million to broadcast 10 Thursday night NFL games on its platform. But when you dig into the details, it starts to get interesting. For starters, Twitter plans rebroadcast the stream from CBS and NBC who have paid $450 million for the rights to broadcast the same games. By the way, those networks also do streaming of their own. So one has to wonder what value Twitter adds to this.
My guess is that Twitter, who’s usage numbers have been dropping is taking a swing at this scheme to try and stay relevant. It sounds kind of sketchy to me. But maybe they might be on to something. We’ll have to see if this brings new people to Twitter when this starts in the fall.
