Apple Deep Sixing Quicktime For Windows…Uninstall It NOW

Windows users take note. Apple is going to stop putting out updates to Quicktime for Windows. That means that security issues including two zero day issues are not going to get addressed. Here’s the weird thing. The only people they told were Trend Micro.who in tun released a security advisory describing the two zero-day vulnerabilities for Quicktime for Windows, and the fact that Apple told them, but nobody else that Quicktime was being deep sixed.

Seeing as it is not being updated, you should uninstall Quicktime for Windows right now. There are no attacks that leverage Quicktime for Windows, but there will be. Thus follow the instructions at this link to get Quicktime off your PC:

Apple should really be far more forthcoming when it comes to stuff like this as computer security is not trivial. Shame on them!

Now, if you do want to play Quicktime media on your PC, might I suggest VLC? It is free, plays every media format known to man, and is frequently updated. What more could you ask for?

  1. I just tried uninstalling QuickTime and got an error saying “a newer version of quicktime is already installed this installation cannot proceed”. A quick Google search shows this has been a common and tricky problem for years. The solutions I’ve tried so far haven’t worked, so I’ll have to keep digging.
