The news is out that Bell is going to buy MTS which is Manitoba Telecom for just under $4 billion. The reason why this will suck is that it will likely reduce competition in the Canadian telco space. To head that off, Bell is also going to see some subscribers and dealers in a separate transaction to Telus. The deal is said to be friendly for what it’s worth.
My take on this goes something like this. Those in Manitoba can fully expect their rates for telco services to go up as they’ll be less competition to keep rates at a reasonable level. But of course that assumes that this deal will clear all the usual hurdles from people such as the CRTC and the Competition Bureau of Canada. I fully expect that it will which means that this deal will really suck for those in Manitoba.
