It turns out they announced a lot of software related items. But strangely, not one hardware related item. That was kind of odd. But we’ll see on that front. Let me get to what they did announce:
iOS 10 Announced: Apple announced their 10th version of iOS. Apple’s list of new features for iOS 10 is extensive, focusing on revamping established apps and introducing new aspects of the user interface, as well as doubling down on privacy. Not to mention expanding on what Siri can do. Here’s a short video that quickly goes through what you can expect:
If you want to know more, Apple has a page dedicated to iOS 10 that is live now. The developer preview of iOS 10 is available today, and a public beta program will begin in July. Users interested in the public beta can sign up for information at beta.Apple.com. iOS 10 will be available in the fall for free for iPhone 5 and later and all iPad Pro and Air models. The fourth-generation iPad and the iPad mini 2 and later will also support iOS 10.
macOS Sierra Announced: OS X has been renamed macOS to bring it inline with tvOS, watchOS, and iOS. If macOS sounds familiar, you’ve likely used Macs in the 1990’s as that is what the Mac operating system was named back then. Except it was called “MacOS” but whatever. Key features of macOS Sierra include window tab support across multiple apps, copy and paste between devices, Siri integration, and more. There’s also a Auto Unlock’ allows Apple Watch wearers to gain access to their locked Mac simply by walking into its vicinity, whereby they become automatically logged into the desktop. It also gives people another incentive to buy an Apple Watch. I have to say, why not also support doing the same thing with an iPhone. But whatever. macOS Sierra is available to developers for testing today. Apple says a public beta will be launched in July, while the final public release is coming in the fall. You can get more details here.
watchOS 3 Announced: The third version of the OS for the Apple Watch got announced. This update includes several performance and navigation improvements, new watch faces and apps, several fitness-related features, and more. Of the many features come to mind, one is really interesting. You can now press and hold the side button and Apple Watch will initiate a call with 911 or 999, or whatever number that you need to get to emergency services. The feature, which works over Wi-Fi or cellular, includes a medical card with your personal information and any medical conditions, and can send a message to loved ones. More details are available here. watchOS 3 is available as a developer beta today. A public beta will be released in July. The free software update will officially launch in the fall.
New tvOS Announced: The OS for the Apple TV got a new update today. Siri gets functionality and features, there’s single sign-on for your Apple ID and more. Apple also announced that a few new apps will be arriving on tvOS, including Sling, Fox Sports Go, Molotov TV, and a handful of game-based apps like Minecraft Story Mode and Sketch Party. Get more info here. tvOS is “coming soon”…. Whatever that means.
Swift Playgrounds Announced: Apple today revealed an all-new Swift Playgrounds app that aims to introduce users to writing code on the various Apple platforms. Along with other features, the app has custom “learn to code” lessons from Apple that focus on crafting visual cues around numeric coding data to slowly introduce kids into the world of coding. Multi-touch on the iPad helps coding in the app more straightforward, but Apple also crafted a new coding keyboard to add in new code in just a few keystrokes. Expect it to ship when iOS 10 does, but you can find out more here.
I’ll circle back to the lack of hardware part. It is odd that Apple didn’t announce any new hardware as their notebook line with the exception of the entry level MacBook is about a year old. Plus other hardware like the Mac Pro and the iMac for example are in need of updates as well. We’ll have to see what Apple has planned on those fronts.
UPDATE: One thing that I forgot to mention is that ApplePay has now been extended to allow you to pay at websites and other online services that support it. Also, here’s the video of the keynote.
