How To Move Your E-Mail And Contacts Off The Rogers Yahoo/Oath E-Mail Platform
Because of the change of the terms of service of the Yahoo/Oath e-mail platform that Rogers uses, I have been asked how can users move off that platform because of the privacy issues that have been uncovered. I can tell you that it does take some work, but it is possible for the average person to move off that platform by downloading e-mails and contacts.
Let’s start with the contacts as that’s easy:
- In Rogers Yahoo Mail, click the Contacts icon .
- Click Actions | select Export.
- Select a format to export (if you’re unsure, I recommend Yahoo CSV).
- Click Export now.
This will download your contacts to a file that you could use to import into an e-mail client like Microsoft Outlook or some e-mail service like Gmail. Next you want to delete your contacts by doing the following:
- Go to contacts and check the select all check box. Yahoo displays the number of contacts selected in the right side panel.
- “Delete Contacts”
Now to the hard part which is to download the e-mail. You’ll need an e-mail client to pull this off and I recommend Mozilla Thunderbird as that will download and save your emails in MBOX format. You then have to set it up to download all your email. General instructions on setting up Mozilla can be found here with options for setting things up manually and automatically. You may need the server settings for Rogers which are:
Incoming Server | imap.broadband.rogers.com or imap.nl.rogers.com |
Incoming Port | 993 |
SSL | Yes |
POP Authentication | Email address: Enter your full Rogers Yahoo! email address Username: Enter your full Rogers Yahoo! email address Password: You’ll need to create an app password in the Rogers Member Centre. |
Outgoing Server | smtp.broadband.rogers.com or smtp.nl.rogers.com |
Outgoing Port | 465 |
SSL | Yes |
SMTP Authentication | Email address: Enter your full Rogers Yahoo! email address Username: Enter your full Rogers Yahoo! email address Password: You’ll need to create an app password in the Rogers Member Centre. |
You will have to likely create an app password to make this work. Here’s how you do it.
- Go to the Rogers Member Centre sign-in page.
- Enter the Rogers Yahoo! email address and password for the account you’d like to create an app password for, then select Next.
- Mobile: Select the menu icon (
) in the top-left corner, then select Account Information.
Desktop: Select Account Information in the top-right of your browser window. - Select Authorized Applications.
- In the Name your password field, label your app password with the name of the email program it’s for, then select Generate. A pop-up containing a randomly generated app password will appear.
- Write down the password or copy it to your clipboard.
- Enter this password during your email set-up when prompted. When finished, select Done in the pop-up.
You can download all the mail once everything is set up. It snags everything in your inbox and outbox along with any other folders that you might have in your e-mail account. From there to export your mail, I would suggest that you use this Mozilla Thunderbird add on to make it easy to export your mails in MBOX format. That way you can import it into another e-mail program.
Once you export your e-mail, you can use Thunderbird to delete it all from the Yahoo/Oath servers. Because as I said here, you want to delete your e-mail and contacts to keep Yahoo/Oath from reading your e-mail.
Give this a shot and leave a comment to let me know how it goes.

Thanks. Worked even better than I expected. Mozilla Thunderbird automatic email setup got the wrong (yahoo) info so I just clicked manual setup and used the info you provided, clicked continue, and it immediately ‘snagged’ all my email (I did not need to set up an app password – although I had already done so for my smartphone so don’t know if that made a difference).
You did not mention if ‘snagged’ means downloaded or just recorded locally but still saved on the rogers server. Can all my email be deleted from Rogers without losing the email in Thunderbird, i.e. do I have to export before deleting from Rogers/Yahoo?

are the PORT settings the same if your POP3 and no imap?

POP incoming port settings are port 995. And the server setting is pop.broadband.rogers.com. SMTP settings are the same.

I use Thunderbird email, but I understand that it is no longer part of Mozilla. Is that correct? I am with Rogers and when in emails, I am frequently/daily having my email freeze. I have to get out and come back. Also, I am frequently being asked for my password; very annoying. Why is this happening? What can I do? Also, can you recommend a very user friendly, but private/secure email server I can use; don’t mind paying.

I was under the impression that Thunderbird is still part of Mozilla as I just checked and it still is on Mozilla’s web infrastructure.
In terms of your email issues, these are things that I have not heard of. Though I have a theory. Are you using an app based password for your Rogers email: https://communityforums.rogers.com/t5/Internet-Knowledge-Base/How-to-create-an-App-Password-for-your-Rogers-email-address-on/ta-p/443907
I am thinking that what could be happening is that you don’t have an app based password and Thunderbird doesn’t know how to deal with it and crashes as a result.
Please advise.

Thank you for your reply. I don’t know what you mean by an app. based password. I am using a PC with Windows 10.

Rogers via Yahoo who does their email for them uses app based passwords. In short, you have to make a password for every app you use. So there would be one password for Thunderbird, and another one for say a smartphone. That’s a security measure. I am going to guess that you might not have done this and that might be causing your issues.

The access to my Rogers email shows in Go/Folders/myrogersemail but neither folder is opening when I click on them, hmm…

I think I got it: I needed to close the Thunderbird and go back in. Now it’s all there. Thanks for this, IT Nerd!

One question: once I leave Rogers internet and am no longer their client, is it going to be possible to use the old rogers email name_lastname@rogers through Thunderbird?
December 6, 2020 at 11:48 am
It will not be possible. Rogers will terminate access to that email account. Thus you will be unable to send or receive email. But at least you will have all your sent and received emails in Thunderbird.

Weird thing. I started deleting messages in my Rogers account and they’re disappearing from the Thunderbird too.
December 7, 2020 at 9:54 am
It’s doing that because you didn’t export your mail to MBOX format BEFORE deleting them from Roger’s server.
From my article:
“You can download all the mail once everything is set up. It snags everything in your inbox and outbox along with any other folders that you might have in your e-mail account. From there to export your mail, I would suggest that you use this Mozilla Thunderbird add on to make it easy to export your mails in MBOX format. The Mozilla Thunderbird add on in that I referenced in the first paragraph is this one: https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools/?src=hp-dl-mostpopular?src=hp-dl-mostpopular
Hope that helps!

Thx. The .xpi download of the add-on is not opening, will see what the issue is.
December 7, 2020 at 10:12 am
Ah right. The addon only works with Thunderbird 14-60, and the one that I downloaded yesterday is 78.5.1
December 7, 2020 at 10:14 am
Found the newer version: https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools-ng/?src=ss
December 7, 2020 at 10:22 am
Oh okay. I should update the article. I did it a while ago and you’re the first person in a while to ping me about it.
December 7, 2020 at 10:21 am
…which is also not working. Alright, if you know of another similar extension, lemme know. Thanks for all your help.
December 7, 2020 at 10:23 am
You could try this. I have not tested this myself but it came from a link on Mozilla’s site: https://www.aid4mail.com/tutorial-export-thunderbird-to-outlook
December 7, 2020 at 10:38 am
Wait – I did manage to open the newest ImportExport version from Thunderbird (it refuses the previous versions). Now I just have to figure out how to use it. Will get there…

Hello there.. I am trying to follow the steps to transfer my emails from Rogers to Thunderbird. I set my new emails in Thunderbird a week ago. I don`t see where I go within Thunderbird to tell Thunderbird to transfer the email over? Please help.

When you say ” I set my new emails in Thunderbird a week ago. I don`t see where I go within Thunderbird to tell Thunderbird to transfer the email over? ” I am not sure what you mean. The workflow that the article has is designed to:
1. Download your email and contacts from Rogers/Yahoo/Oath and save them locally.
2. Import them into another ISP or email program if you so wish.
If you could clarify that for me, I’d really appreciate it.
