3.6M Online Payment Users Impacted In Cross Switch Data Breach

Cross Switch, a leading company in online cross border payment management, is reportedly dealing with a significant data breach impacting the personal information of 3.6 million users throughout much of the African continent.

Threat actor IntelBroker posted messages yesterday on data breach forums announcing the exposure of Cross Switch’s database – “Cross-Switch.com Database, Leaked Download!”

Data includes details such as:

  • Full names
  • Emails
  • Phone numbers
  • Messages
  • Physical addresses
  • Banking information
  • DOBs
  • Usernames

IntelBroker has yet to reveal the motivation behind the Cross Switch data leak.

Mark Campbell, Sr. Director, Cigent had this comment:

“The Cross-Switch breach of PII will undoubtedly be expensive for the company and has put its customers at risk. However, a larger concern is what comes next. This breach could be like other incidents we have seen such as MOVEit, where we continue to see the impact of the breach for months after the original breach is detected. Often these breaches are leveraged to create access points into additional organizations that can be sold by initial access brokers (IAB) so that additional malware can be deployed.”

This breach will have to be watched in 2024 as it is likely to have long term effects. Sucks that this is the world that we no live in. But given how often this sort of thing happens, it’s not surprising.
