OS X 10.5.6 Update Making Fanbois Upset [UPDATED x2]
I’m guessing that the Genius Bars at Apple Stores all over the planet are very busy places at the moment as reports of problems with the OS X 10.5.6 update start to surface. Just take a look at this thread over at Macintouch.com or this thread over at XLR8yourmac.com for some of the issues that people are having. It may be enough to make the Fanbois question their devotion to the Macintosh platform.
My advice for doing OS X updates? Always download the “Combo Updater” and use that to install the update and repair permissions using Disk Utility afterwards. When I do this, I have no issues. Using the Software Update version or the “Delta” updater seems to create havoc from my experience.
UPDATE: Apple has posted a support document on this issue with a suggested fix. The weird thing is that it also says the following:
To avoid this issue, download and install the Mac OS X 10.5.6 Update or later. Note that this update must first be installed to avoid the issue; the issue may occur while downloading the Mac OS X 10.5.6 Update or later.
Huh? As far as I can tell, you get this issue by installing the MacOS X 10.5.6 update. So I have to install the patch that caused this issue to fix it? That doesn’t make sense…
UPDATE #2: Apple has posted an update to Apple Mail that solves some mail related issues that MAY appear when 10.5.6 is installed.

Either one of my machines (old G4 and Intel Mini) have always worked fine with the software update version.

And that is the way it should be. The problem is that it often isn’t. The majority of issues that pop up due to system updates are often due to the software update version. I have rarely heard of problems from using the combo update version.
