China To Google: Stop Serving Up Porn

China has decided that their attempts to censor Internet access has to be stepped up to the next level. As a result, they’ve announced that the’ve started a crackdown to stop porn from being viewed via the Internet:

Seven government agencies will work together on the campaign to “purify the Internet’s cultural environment and protect the healthy development of minors,” said a statement by the information office of the State Council, China’s Cabinet.

Among the targets are Google along with fellow search engine Baidu, as well as web portals Sina and Sohu. A number of video sharing sites and online bulletin boards, that contain “problematic photos, blogs and postings” will be targeted as well. For its part, Google has said that it doesn’t make porn and it will deal with anything that the Chinese government finds objectionable.

One has to wonder if this “crackdown” is just cover to go after other things that the Chinese government has a problem with as porn is already illegal in this country and producers already face severe punishments. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens next.
