Playstation Network Hoses Data On “Fat” PS3 Units [UPDATED]

Sony has some MAJOR explaining to do.

If you have an original “fat” PS3 (as opposed to the new “slim” version), you might not want to turn it on. According to this posting on the Playstation Blog, a clock-related bug might cause data loss on “fat” PS3 models. The PS3 slim isn’t affected as far as Sony knows, and they hope to have everything up and running in the next day or so. Hmmmm…. Kind of reminds you of that other data loss issue with those Danger/Microsoft Sidekicks a while back. That got ugly in a hurry. Sony better hope their issue doesn’t turn out that way.

So if you were hoping to get some Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 gaming tonight, you should hold off on that. Or try using an Xbox 360 instead.

UPDATE: Joystiq is reporting that things seem to be working again. A comment to this story confirms this.

  1. “Fat” PS3s now work. When you turn it on, it’ll tell you it’s April 30th, 2020, but you can sync up with the Internet to sign onto PSN, fix the date and time via Internet, and play your stuff. Good luck!
