Apple Comes To The Table To Defend Its Users From Mac Defender

I guess Apple must have figured out that it had no choice but to step up and do the right thing. In this case they’re doing two things. First this knowledge base article has appeared that explains to users how to deal with the Mac Defender malware that has made news recently. The article also mentions this:

In the coming days, Apple will deliver a Mac OS X software update that will automatically find and remove Mac Defender malware and its known variants.  The update will also help protect users by providing an explicit warning if they download this malware.

It is a good first step though and you have to give credit to Apple for finally doing the right thing. But what needs to happen on a go forward basis is that they have to stop pretending that users can’t get nailed by stuff like this and actually have a frank an honest discussion about security. And it has to go beyond what’s said on this site which claims the following:

With virtually no effort on your part, Mac OS X offers a multilayered system of defenses against viruses and other malicious applications, or malware.

I think that the Mac Defender episode blows that theory out of the water.
