OS X Lion is going to be one of the most advanced operating systems when it appears in a few weeks, but how you get it and who can get it is downright backwards. From the how you get it part, it’s only going to be available via the App Store. Seeing as it’s going to be about 4GB in size, that requires broadband. If you have capped or metered Internet, that’s going to cost you a lot more than the $29.99 than Apple is asking for Lion. If you don’t have broadband at all, then you’re out of luck. Not to mention that it isn’t clear from Apple if you can create a boot DVD in case you need to do a reinstall.Though I am aware of a couple of people who have figured out ways to do this. But try describing these methods to your Mother in law as there’s no way the average person is going to be able to do either of these methods. This also assumes that Apple doesn’t screw its users further by making sure that users can’t create their own bootable disks.
The who can get it part are people who are running Snow Leopard. Specifically, OS X 10.6.6 which is the minimum that you need to run the App Store. So if you’re running anything earlier than that, you’re likely out of luck.
My guess is that this is an attempt to drive traffic to the App Store so that they can maximize their profit margins, as well as forcibly homogenize their user base by forcing as many of them as possible onto a common platform. Apple really needs to get a clue here as this is just a dumb idea. They could fix this by having physical media available at the Apple Store. That would be very easy to do and cheap too. I don’t see Apple relenting on the requirement to have 10.6.6 on your Mac. But if they want some extra brownie points, I suspect they could get the bar down to 10.6.0 if they really wanted to.
Perhaps Mac users who aren’t thrilled about Apple’s actions in this regard should use their feedback form to let Apple know just how dumb this is. El Jobso won’t be responding to your feedback (for that you need to send an e-mail to sjobs@apple.com). But if enough people use the feedback form to express their displeasure, I’m sure it will get his attention.
