From the “good luck with that” file comes this from The Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada. According to Global News, they want a crown corporation to be Canada’s 4th telco:
The union says if the federal government wants to provide consumers with a fourth major carrier in each market it should acquire one of the struggling small telecom companies, reserve some of the available spectrum that will be up for auction next year and establish a Crown corporation.
The union has thousands of members at BCE Inc.’s Bell Canada (TSX:BCE), which is one of Canada’s largest wireless carriers and one of the leading forces behind a high-profile campaign to get the Harper government to change its current policy.
For those who are not familiar with the term “Crown Corporation” it means that it is owned and run from an arms length by the government. Canada Post is an example of this.
Here’s why this will never happen:
- The current government is the Conservative Party of Canada. They are of the persuasion not to spend taxpayers money to do this sort of thing.
- The current government aren’t exactly fans of unions. Thus it is highly unlikely that they would do this to help a union.
- You can already see that the current government isn’t being swayed by the arguments of the big 3 telcos. Chances are this won’t have an effect either.
Thus this is a proposal that is basically dead on arrival. Much to the dismay of The Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada.
