Wind Says It Will Buy Mobilicity…. Huh?

Perhaps I’m missing something but when I read this Edmonton Journal story stating that if Verizon doesn’t buy Mobilicity, Wind will, I was taken aback. Here’s what Wind Mobile, CEO and chairman Anthony Lacavera had to say:

“It puts me in a position to move on Mobilicity before the (spectrum) auction,” said Lacavera, who has made no secret in recent years that he wants to acquire Mobilicity.”

And:

“I can’t outbid Verizon. So if they really want to buy it before the auction I’m not going to be successful. It’s just a mathematical reality,” he said.

However, Lacavera said he believes Verizon is keeping all doors open to enter Canada’s cellphone market until it has to put down a deposit on Sept. 17 to participate in the auction.

“I just don’t believe that Verizon’s doing anything other than playing all of its options,” he said from Toronto.

Here’s what I must be missing. Vimpelcom who owns a portion of Wind has been shopping them around for some time as they have not set the world on fire. How would they buy Mobilicity? Also worth noting is the fact that Lacavera has correctly (in my opinion) stated Verizon’s strategy of keeping all options open to enter Canada.

For Canadian cell phone users, these are sure interesting times. And things will get more interesting in the next few weeks I am sure.
