PCMag.com Names Rogers #1 In LTE Speed…. Bashes Big 3 Pricing

Here’s some good news for Rogers given what happened to them last week. PCMag.com traveled across Canada to 13 Canadian metropolitan areas and looked at the mobile network speeds for Rogers, Bell, and Telus among others. And according to their tests, Rogers Came out on top:

Rogers delivered download speeds higher than 8Mbps at least 90 percent of the time in every city except Toronto (where it was 86 percent), making it the most consistent high-speed download experience. Bell broke that 90-percent barrier in 10 cities; Telus, in five. Higher upload speeds, especially during our Toronto tests, helped Bell keep pace. But in the many cities where Rogers offers 2600MHz service, its speeds tended to dominate, and we think it will extend its lead with the new Category 4 LTE phones coming out over the next several months.

The article goes on to explain how the testing was done. At first glance, the methodology is solid and there’s nothing to complain about here. It also has comments about each carrier and where they could improve things. But what caught my eye was this:

Major carriers’ lockstep service plans charge high rates for this top-quality service, and if you want to pay less, you’ll either have to give up download speed or the cherished Canadian freedom to roam.

Hmmm…. If Americans notice that the big three are basically in lockstep in terms of what they charge for this level of service, then there clearly is a problem with what Canadians pay. Still, it didn’t stop Rogers from promoting this win along with PCMag.com naming them the “Fastest ISP in Canada” on Redboard. I guess they’re hoping that nobody notices the part about what Canadians pay.
