I am pretty sure that this is clearly a pre-emptive strike against Apple. Samsung today announced a number of new products:
First there’s the Note 4 and Note Edge which bring the following to the table starting with the Note 4:
- 5.7-inch Quad-ultra HD (2560×1440) Super AMOLED display at 518 pixels per inch
- 2.7 GHz quad-core processor or the 1.9 GHz octo-core Exynos 5433
- Category 6 LTE on the quad-core or Category 4 LTE on the octo-core. This is geography dependent.
- 16-megapixel rear camera with image stabilization
- 3.7-megapixel front camera designed for selfies
- heart rate sensor
- new S-Pen with improved sensitivity that detects pressure, nib tilt, and speed
The Note Edge is a smartphone that is identical to the Note 4 specs wise, but features a curved display. The curved edge of the display operate separately from the main display providing an app launcher or contextual controls depending on the app that is being used.
Also announced was the Gear VR virtual reality headset which was developed in conjunction with Oculus and is compatible with the Note 4. Finally Samsung also re-announced the Gear S smart watch. It features a 2-inch, curved AMOLED display, and 3G connectivity. The Tizen-powered device also includes dual-core 1.0 GHz processor, 4 GB of storage, 512 MB of RAM, and sensors such as GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope, UV detector, barometer, and heart rate monitor.
I also got a note from my friends at Telus that the Note 4 will be available this fall. No word on other carriers in Canada just yet. But I expect to hear from them soon with news on their plans for this new Samsung gear.
UPDATE; Rogers will have the Note 4 as well.
