Samsung has not one but two flagship phones that they announced at Mobile World Congress today. The S6 and S6 Edge finally ditches the plastic for metal which brings it in line with the phone they are targeting. The iPhone.
For the most part, the two devices offer the exact same specs, with only a few minor differences in dimension and battery life.
- Android 5.0.2
- TouchWiz Skin
- 5.1-inch QHD display
- 3GB of RAM
- 8 core Exynos 7 chipset
- Up to 128GB of storage
- 16MP camera in the back
Some of the key features Samsung is touting in these new devices include:
- Embedded battery that’s bigger in the S6 edge
- No microSD card
- Camera quick launch
- Smarter fingerprint scanning
- Wireless charging
- Quick-charging
- No waterproofing
When it comes to Bell, Rogers, and Telus, you can pre-register now or shortly. The phone is slated to ship on April 10 to 20+ countries around the world.
That’s not all that was announced. Samsung also announced their answer to Apple Pay. Called Samung Pay, which as far as I am concerned is hardly original, it is an application with NFC hardware that allows you to pay for goods and services by waving your smartphone near a register instead of swiping a credit card or pulling out cash. The S6 and S6 Edge will support this. The plans are to launch in the US and South Korea in the summer, with Europe and China to come later.
Finally, Samsung kicked out details on their new Gear VR headset which is attempt number two when it comes to VR headsets. It is 15 percent lighter than its original virtual reality headset developed with Oculus. It comes with newly designed straps. Samsung also added ventilation, which should make the device more comfortable to wear long term.
So, does anything catch your eye at Mobile World Congress thus far seeing as HTC, BlackBerry and Samsung had announcements today? Post a comment and let me know.
UPDATE: Telus confirmed that the Samsung GALAXY S6 will be available on their network with pre-orders opening March.5th. Official launch date to be confirmed.
