Canadian Telcos Offer Up Free Calls To Nepal….. Except Bell

In the wake of the earthquake in Nepal, Canadian telcos are offering free calls to Nepal so that friends and family can confirm that their loved ones are okay. Here are some examples starting with Rogers. This RedBoard post has details on what they’re doing:

Until May 12 we’re covering the cost of all calls to Nepal for Rogers and Fido customers so you can get in touch with friends and family there. Additionally, if you’re in Nepal, your roaming charges are waived until May 12th as well.

Then there’s Telus:

But what stands out is the fact that Bell isn’t doing anything similar. It hasn’t gone un-noticed as there’s a growing Reddit post on the subject.

The closest thing to Bell doing anything for Nepal is this:

While it’s good that Bell is offering up $100K to relief efforts, it seems really strange that they aren’t offering up the same sorts of things that Telus and Bell are in terms of free or cheap calls to Nepal. The fact that they aren’t is really projecting a negative light on them. I would suggest that they rethink this before they get more negative press.

I would also be remiss if I did not give kudos to Rogers and Telus for giving people the means to make sure their loved ones are safe in Nepal. Not to mention that you should donate to organizations like the Red Cross to support efforts to help the people of Nepal.
