Apple announced today that it has updated the iMac family with more powerful processors and graphics, cheaper Fusion Drive options and a new 21.5-inch 4K “Retina” model, all running OS X 10.11 El Capitan and offering dual Thunderbolt 2 ports, Gigabit Ethernet and four USB3 ports. Here’s the rundown:
- New Retina iMac pricing starts at $1499 USD for the 21.5-inch 4K model with 3.1GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200, and a 1TB, 5400RPM hard drive, plus Apple’s new Magic keyboard and mouse. More on that in a second.
- Pricing for the The 27-inch 5K Retina model starts at $1799 USD with 3.2GHz quad‑core Intel Core i5, 1TB 7200RPM hard drive and AMD Radeon R9 M380 graphics (with 2GB of video RAM).
- A 21.5-inch non-retina model starts at $1099 USD with a 1.6GHz dual-core i5, Intel HD Graphics 6000 and 8 GB of RAM.
New Apple “Magic” accessories were also announced today and here is the rundown on those:
- A $99 USD Magic Keyboard
- A $79 USD Magic Mouse 2
- A $129 USD Magic Trackpad 2 that incorporates Apple’s Force Touch technology in a larger surface.
All three devices are wireless and all use rechargeable batteries with charging (plus automatic pairing) via a Lightning-USB cable.
Also of note, iMovie has been updated to bring 4K support on certain Macs and iOS devices, 1080p at 60fps, user interface changes, “performance and stability improvements” and other changes.
All these new products are available immediately.
