When I work up this morning, I went to double check the balance on the Starbucks card in my Apple Wallet. When I did that, I saw this:

Clearly Apple Pay is live in Canada. Now as I reported yesterday, this is being brought to Canada by American Express. But just for fun, I decided to try my Visa card to see what would happen. That didn’t work as my bank doesn’t support Apple Pay. Ditto for my MasterCard. Also for fun, a friend tried a Scotiabank AMEX card and it didn’t work either. So this means that only cards issued by American Express directly work with Apple Pay. That along with the fact that not many retailers take AMEX is sure to limit adoption. But hopefully this is the push that is needed to get the major Canadian banks on board. Otherwise, Canadians will once again look towards the US and wonder why we can’t have nice things like they do.
UPDATE: I just watched someone set up Apple Pay on their iPhone and if you do have a supported AMEX card, setting it up is easy. You scan your card using the camera on your phone, fill in expiry date, security code and a validation code is emailed by AMEX.
