Apple Totally Pwned At Pwn2Own

If you are still one of the few people who believe in the security of Apple’s OS X operating system, this story should change your belief. At the latest Pwn2Own competition where white hat hackers can make money by showing vulnerabilities in commonly available software, here’s what went down:

  • Microsoft Windows was exploited six times
  • Apple’s OS X five times
  • Adobe Flash four times
  • Apple Safari three times
  • Microsoft Edge was pwned twice
  • Google Chrome was pwned (although this attack was a duplicate of an independently reported vulnerability)

In total white hat hackers earned $460,000 in prizes for finding and exploiting 21 security vulnerabilities. But Apple is the big loser here having been pwned 8 times. That’s more than any other vendor. Tim Cook must not be overly thrilled about this. Hopefully he will do something about it going forward.

Pwn2Own 2016 was held over two days alongside the CanSecWest security conference and sponsored by Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Trend Micro, and the Zero Day Initiative. Trend Micro’s reports on day one and day two of the competition provide more details.
