Tesla Unveils The Model 3 To The World

Anyone who has read this blog for a while knows that I am not a fan of electric cars because there isn’t a really robust infrastructure to support them. They are also expensive and have limited range relative to gas powered cars. Tesla last night made a serious attempt to change that by unveiling the Model 3. Here are the key features that Tesla hopes will make you put down $1000 to reserve one:

  • A range of up to 215 miles per charge
  • 0-60 in six seconds
  • Autopilot autonomous driving features
  • Seating for 5
  • 5 star saftey rating
  • A price tag of $35K USD before government incentives

The last point is key as that brings the Tesla down to a price point where if you factor in government incentives, is affordable to a broader audience. Now Tesla promises that they’ll be able to pump out a high volume of these when it is scheduled to launch in late 2017. That will be interesting to see as Tesla has had production problems in the past and volume will be a critical success factor for the Model 3. They’ve also promised to increase the number of Supercharging stations worldwide to address the “range anxiety” that make people (like me) not consider electric cars. I guess the bottom line is that we’ll have to stay tuned to see how this plays out.

Here’s a video of the Model 3 launch from last night:
