I’ve finally got iOS 10 on my iPhone 6. The bad news first. If you have a 16GB iPhone, this may be the update that finally forces you to get a new iPhone with more storage. In my case, I can no longer have all my music (almost 8GB of music) on my phone. At present, I have no music on my phone and 6.7GB of space free. Of course, as if by co-incidence, the the least amount of space that you can now get in anything other than an iPhone SE is 32GB. In my case, I know that I’ll be in the market for a new iPhone shortly…. Which I am guessing is part of Apple’s master plan to rule the world.
Now the more positive news. iOS 10 has a bunch of features that make this upgrade worthwhile. Here are the ones that stand out for me:
- Messages now supports rich media. If you send a tweet URL using Messages, it previews the tweet. Ditto for songs, or YouTube videos. It is very cool.
- Maps has one feature that I have wanted for years. The ability to avoid tolls and highways. Why is this important? Maps doesn’t always tell you that a route includes a toll road. And if you’re not paying attention, it’s going to cost you.
- Siri seems to perform better. That’s not a shock as Apple on the back end
swapped out some of its bits for a deep neural network for enhanced voice interpretation and better responses. I also can’t wait for the day that I can use Siri to order a coffee at Starbucks while driving on the highway, then route me to the nearest Starbucks to pick it up. Sounds far fetched? Nope. Siri now allows third party app integration. Cool!
- The new lock screen is cool. Yes, “slide to unlock” is gone as it has been replaced by “press to unlock”. However, you get in exchange quick to time sensitive information. #win
- Speaking of the lock screen, sliding to the left opens the camera which users will find much easier.
The upgrade itself took two hours to download, likely because I was doing it when the rest of the world was doing it. After which, the performance of my iPhone was very good.
