Serious Exploits And Bugs Fixed In iOS 10.2

If you were wondering if you should update to iOS 10.2, the answer is simple. Do so immediately. According to this document, several high profile bugs and security issues have been fixed including:

  • An exploit that allows someone who has physical access to an iOS device to get to Messages and Photos has been fixed. I reported on that here back in mid-November.
  • A bug that allowed someone to create a video that would crash an iOS device has been fixed. I reported on that here in late November.
  • An exploit that allowed someone to bypass activation lock and Find My iPhone has been fixed. I reported on that in early December here.

But unsurprisingly, there were a couple of other serious exploits that were fixed that most of us were not aware of. Examples include:

  • The device may not lock the screen after the idle timeout.
  • A person with physical access to an iOS device may be able to keep the device unlocked…. I wonder if this one has anything to do with this story where UK cops were able to get access to a suspects phone by snatching it out of his hands whilst he was using it?

Clearly these aren’t trivial. Thus my recommendation is to upgrade to iOS 10.2 right now.
