I noticed this on the Apple Canada online store yesterday while looking at the new Mac Mini (which looks like a really sweet machine by the way):

Note the text at the bottom left corner:
Your new iPhone. Direct from Apple and ready to use.
When you purchase your iPhone from the Apple Online Store, you’ll get it commitment-free. So you can sign up for service with the carrier of your choice and change your carrier at any time. Questions? Call our iPhone experts at 1-800-MY-APPLE.
So Canadians can get an unlocked iPhone from Apple directly and use it with Bell, Telus, or Rogers. Of course they’ll pay a higher cost as the phone will not be subsidized by the carrier, but at least Canadians (for a change) get a choice of carrier, plus they can go overseas and use a local SIM with the iPhone. That means they won’t get hosed by their domestic telco for roaming charges.
Meanwhile, Americans are stuck with AT&T. That has to suck.
