iPhone Comes To Canada – We Think

In what has to qualify as the worst press release EVER, Rogers Wireless announced that they are going to have the iPhone in Canada:

“TORONTO, April 29 /CNW/ – Ted Rogers, President and Chief Executive Officer of Rogers Communications Inc. today issued the following statement:
We’re thrilled to announce that we have a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Canada later this year. We can’t tell you any more about it right now, but stay tuned.”

Seriously, that’s the whole press release. If you don’t believe me, click here to see it with all of the legal boilerplate intact. Really Rogers, couldn’t you do better than that? Maybe it’s designed that way to keep customers who are sick of getting “Rogered” by Rogers from simply bolting to Telus, Bell, or some other wireless provider. Or perhaps they’re waiting for the rumored 3G iPhone since Rogers has spent a small fortune upgrading its network to 3G speeds (or something in the neighborhood of 3G depending on where you live) and they don’t have a clear timetable as to when that iPhone might appear. Either way, it’s lame-O.

Another question is if Rogers is going to have unlimited data plans since that’s been a requirement of “The Steve” for any carrier who wants the iPhone. Given that Ted Rogers (CEO of Rogers) isn’t a fan of unlimited plans (Example: $90 CDN for 25MB of data plus 350 minutes for voice for a BlackBerry per month… WTF?), one would think that he will have to cave on that to some degree, if not entirely.

Still, this has the panties of Apple Fanbois in the great white north wet with excitement. Just check this thread on the Canadian Apple Fanboi site ehmac.ca for proof of that.

So, when do Canadians get it? My vote is for July based on the fact that the rumor mill has the 3G iPhone being announced at the World Wide Developers Conference in June. That has often has been the platform for “The Steve” to release new products.
