Before I start this 5 part review, I need to explain the backstory. I got an e-mail the other day from a Bell reseller who apparently reads my blog. Here’s part of what he said:
I know that Bell that hasn’t exactly reached out to you, and they haven’t treated you well. It’s made you hate them. But those of us who are associated with Bell are not all bad. Just to prove it, we’re willing to give you a Blackberry Bold 9780 for you to review. It will also give you a chance to review Bell’s new 3G network as I’ve seen review after review of phones on the Rogers network. I think that at the end of your time with this phone you’ll see that Bell is a great choice for your readers.
Okay. I bit at this as this is the closest that I’ve ever come to dealing with Bell. But I did have a condition. I wasn’t going to mention the dealer’s name as I didn’t want to advertise for them. I wanted this review to focus on Bell’s new network and the Blackberry. To my surprise the dealer agreed, and I got a brand new Blackberry 9780 with a Bell SIM card in it today. Here’s the key specs:
- GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900, HSPA, and WiFi connectivity
- GPS
- Bluetooth 2.1
- Micro USB connection
- BlackBerry OS 6
- Camera: 5 megapixels with flash, face detection, image stabilization and auto focus with video support
On paper, this looks really cool. Plus it will be my first look at Bell’s HSPA network as my previous experience with Bell has been with their EVDO/1X network. This should prove to be an interesting review. I’ll start posting my impressions as I start using this phone tomorrow.
