My Trip To India And Australia: Part 5 – Flying To Dubai

Posted in Tips with tags on February 28, 2015 by itnerd

I’m typing this entry from the gate while waiting for my flight from Dubai to New Delhi. This has been an interesting 12 hours. Let me see if I can recap the events for you.

First, my flight aboard the Emirates Airbus A380 from Toronto to Dubai left on time. And I mean literally left on time. I was impressed. Point to point it was 11 hours and 30 minutes. The A380 is a massive aircraft. I cannot believe how many people they managed to get onto it. The thing is I think Emirates might have tried to get too many people into economy. I say that because I sat in the middle isle and my shoulders barely had any room. It was not unusual for me to touch the passengers on either side of me. Room for my feet disappeared when the person in front leaned back to sleep. Other than that, the plane was reasonably comfortable for the most part taking into account that I was flying economy.

The other thing that happened is that I became ill on the flight with sweats, tingling extremities, and a touch of dizziness. I contacted the cabin crew and a tall man with a German accent arrived and took charge of the situation. First he gave me some mango juice while he had me sit down in a seat near to the kitchen in the middle of the aircraft. Then he had me put my head between my knees and told me to breathe deeply. That actually helped a bit. He was very attentive asking me some very pointed questions and expected me to answer them honestly, which I did. He then took me to the back of the aircraft and had me lie on the floor with my feet up. I thought that was weird, but within 10 minutes, I was feeling better. He then escorted me back to my seat and kept a close eye on me for the rest of the flight to make sure I was okay. I really appreciated that. He figured that I had been sitting too long so there wasn’t enough blood getting from my legs to my head. It a common thing apparently on long haul flights. I never did get his name, but if Emirates Airlines reads this, there’s a tall German cabin crew member on flight EK242 on 2/27/2015 who deserves a raise for the way he took care of me.

Other notes about the Emirates A380:

The infotainment system called ICE is the best I’ve ever seen. It combines a touchscreen that responds to smartphone like gestures with a Sony Playstation like joystick with a secondary screen. It’s easy to use and the system is full of content including exterior shots of the A380 from the nose, underneath the plane, and from the tail looking forward. I watched a movie and several TV shows instead of using my iPhone to keep me entertained.

IMG_0870Each seat had one of these. It’s a travel toothbrush, a cloth and a mask so that you can sleep. I forgot mine on the plane which is a shame as it was a nice touch.

Another note, this flight had WiFi. You could get 10MB free or pay $1 for 500 MB. Basically, enough to grab e-mail and maybe do some light surfing. I only enabled my iPhone and didn’t pay for WiFi as all I was doing was iMessaging my wife.

Once I arrived in Dubai, you have to go through security again. But before you do, make sure you check what gate your connecting flight is leaving from.

IMG_0871Dubai International Airport is a huge airport so this is how I get to my connecting flight which was at gate B22:

IMG_0873I took an elevator which took me from the A series gates to this place:

IMG_0874Yes, I catch a train to get to the B and C series gates. The train took about 5 minutes point to point. Another elevator ride and a short walk, I was at my gate. But if I were so inclined, I could take advantage of the shopping:

IMG_0872 IMG_0875There’s a lot of high end shopping here at Dubai International. That likely means that it’s above my price point.

I’m typing this using the 30 minutes of free WiFi that’s available at the airport. If you need more, you’ll have to pay for it. Alternately, I could use Skype WiFi combined with the Skype credits that I always have on my Skype account to get online. It was very easy to get connected, but free “all you can eat” WiFi would have been appreciated.

Very shortly, I’ll be boarding my flight to New Delhi. After some sleep I’ll post the next part of my trip online. Watch for it!

UPDATE: Before I board my flight, I should mention that I am seeing what looks like “man in the middle” behavior when it comes to SSL connections. Certificates appear to be coming from the access point and not from the server. I haven’t got time to definitively prove this, but if this is the case, this is not cool.

Bye Bye Flash! Part 4 – I Finally Found Something That I Need That Won’t Work Without Flash

Posted in Commentary with tags , on February 28, 2015 by itnerd

Up until now, life without Flash was perfect. In part 1, I found that the performance and battery life of my MacBook Pro improved by removing it. Part 2 had me answering questions about porn and surveys and finding that they still worked with a couple of exceptions. And part 3 had me experiencing no issues with not having Flash on my system.

That changed today as I discovered that on the Mac platform, you need Flash if you have a Belkin NetCam. That’s because unlike the PC which offers an alternate plug in so you don’t have to use Flash, the NetCam website doesn’t have anything similar for the Mac. Now is this a deal breaker? As long as I have my phone on me, it’s not as the NetCam app allows me to view video. If I have to rely on a Mac to see what’s going on at home, then I have a problem. I’m going to install Google Chrome as it comes with Flash as part of the browser. Thus I don’t have to reinstall Flash on my system. When I get a chance to do that, I’ll report back and finish up this experiment and let you know what the final verdict is.

Google Bans Explicit Content On Blogger… Then Backs Down

Posted in Commentary with tags on February 28, 2015 by itnerd

Earlier this week Google caused some parts of the Internet to explode with rage when Google decided to ban explicit content from their Blogger blogging platform. The plan was that starting on March 23, blogs with sexually explicit content or graphic nudity will be made private. Google also made assurances that no content will be deleted, but only the blog’s owner, administrators on the blog, and those who have had the blog shared with them, will be able to see the explicit content. Here’s what Google said at the time:

In the coming weeks, we’ll no longer allow blogs that contain sexually explicit or graphic nude images or video. We’ll still allow nudity presented in artistic, educational, documentary, or scientific contexts, or presented where there are other substantial benefits to the public from not taking action on the content. The new policy will go into effect on the 23rd of March 2015. After this policy goes into effect, Google will restrict access to any blog identified as being in violation of our revised policy. No content will be deleted, but only blog authors and those with whom they have expressly shared the blog will be able to see the content we’ve made private.

That didn’t go over well with many on the Internet who started moving their blogs to other blogging platforms such as Tumblr who has no problem with explicit content.

Late yesterday, Google changed course because it likely clued in that would like lose lots of money:

This week, we announced a change to Blogger’s porn policy. We’ve had a ton of feedback, in particular about the introduction of a retroactive change (some people have had accounts for 10+ years), but also about the negative impact on individuals who post sexually explicit content to express their identities. So rather than implement this change, we’ve decided to step up enforcement around our existing policy prohibiting commercial porn.

Blog owners should continue to mark any blogs containing sexually explicit content as “adult” so that they can be placed behind an “adult content” warning page.

Okay. I admit that I am a bit cynical. But besides the fact that this policy change would have caught a lot of bloggers such as LGBT blogs, romance book writers, sex toy reviewers, and art nude photographers for example, bloggers who aren’t doing anything “explicit”, I’m sure cash had something to do with it.

Company Seeks Funding To Produce Technology That Immerses Users in Adult Movies

Posted in Commentary with tags on February 28, 2015 by itnerd

I post a fair amount of projects that are looking for crowdfunding on either Kickstarter or Indiegogo. But I have to admit that this is the oddest one that I’ve come across and I could not resist not posting it. Even though it is slightly NSFW.

xSync Technologies has announced a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for a new subscription service that syncs adult massagers with adult movies.

According to the company, the adult entertainment industry is a nearly $13 billion industry, and they believe that their brand-new technology has the potential to completely change the way consumers interact with adult videos. To use xSync, users need only connect xO, xSync’s wireless adapter, to their compatible LELO vibrator. xO then syncs the vibrator and movie. This creates an experience that is immersive and interactive, allowing the user to feel sensations based on what’s going on in the movie.

By bridging the gap between the sensuality of adult movies and the physical interaction of personal massagers, xSync helps users experience an entirely new dimension in their favorite adult movies. xSync also controls multiple nearby vibrators at the same time, so the experience can be enjoyed solo, with a partner, or with a group.

xSync Technologies will be launching an IndieGoGo campaign that will be live in March 2015. Pledgers will be able to able from a variety of perks, including campaign-exclusive rates to xSync’s subscription service, as they help make xSync available to the masses.

Like I said, this is different. But seeing how much cash is in the adult entertainment industry, maybe they’re on to something.
