DEVELOPING: Users Of Belkin’s WEMO NetCam Cannot Log Into Their Accounts

Posted in Commentary with tags on May 14, 2018 by itnerd

Thanks to a reader of this blog, I’ve been alerted to a problem with whatever back end service that runs access to Belkin’s WEMO NetCam products. After digging in to confirm what the user told me, I can say that the following is going on. Users of these cameras are unable to log in via their smartphones to view their camera(s) or change settings. And they sometimes get this error when they try to log in:

IMG_1521

Other times the app seems to hang. I was able to reproduce this myself and I validated that the ports that are referenced in the error message are open. Deleting and reinstalling the NetCam app does not resolve this.

Based on this thread on the Belkin forums, this started on May 12th and the moderator on the forum claims to have escalated the issue. It seems to be restricted to iOS devices at this time, and users can still log into the web portal at netcam.belkin.com assuming that they are using a browser with Flash installed. So users aren’t totally dead in the water, but this is far from ideal.

The reason why this reader reached out to me is due to the fact that he feels that disclosing this to the media is the only way to get Belkin’s attention. He has that perception because of my coverage of the Linksys WRT32X issues from last year and earlier this year. I am not sure if I truly accelerated a fix for that, but the fact that this reader feels that way is a problem for Belkin as that shows that people don’t entirely trust them. Thus I hope a fix for this comes quickly to restore the confidence of their customers.

Watch this space for updates.

UPDATE: A second thread on this topic with some not so happy Belkin NetCam users is also present on their forums. There’s also the suggestion that there is a “major” outage with WeMo products in general. But I cannot find any evidence that supports this.

UPDATE #2: There is some speculation on the Belkin forums that iOS 11.3.1 is responsible for this as people who have earlier versions of iOS appear to be fine. But using that logic, this problem should have appeared on April 25th or thereabouts when iOS 11.3.1 was released. But as far as anyone can tell, this issue appeared this past weekend.

UPDATE #3: Reports are coming in via the Belkin forums that WEMO Netcam users are able to log in now. I have confirmed this as well. I will continue to monitor this, but it appears that this issue is coming to an end. Likely via a back end fix.

UPDATE 4: Consider this issue to be resolved.

However, some points for Belkin on this that they should consider. Belkin has a Twitter handle called @WEMOCares which references another Twitter handle called @WEMOOutages. Neither have been updated in years. Which is bizarre because the former is referenced here. But to be fair, there’s a link that says @WEMOCares that goes to @BelkinCares and one that goes to @WEMOCares. Belkin should clean that up.

The reason why this matters is that I was looking to see if Belkin had posted any info on whatever happened to the WEMO NetCam and found nothing on any of their Twitter handles. And to find two of them that haven’t been used in years is very disappointing as it gives the impression that the WEMO line of products isn’t one that they care about. Not only that, but there was very little in the way of much communication from Belkin other than to say that the issue was escalated. That really isn’t a winning strategy in this day and age where transparency and communication wins the day 100% of the time. Belkin should take a good hard look at how they communicate to customers. I say that because the person who reached out to me did so because he thought that because I would publish this (which I did) it would get the issue resolved faster as it had been an issue for days apparently. There’s something wrong with the universe when a user of a product has to do that as it highlights that perhaps a company not only should be communicating better to its customers, but they also need to restore some trust as well.

Some food for thought for Belkin.

Foxconn Buys Belkin, Wemo, and Linksys…. IF Trump Allows It

Posted in Commentary with tags , on March 27, 2018 by itnerd

Foxconn, the company best-known for manufacturing Apple iPhones among other Apple devices has announced that one of its subsidiaries, Foxconn Interconnect Technology, is purchasing U.S.-based Belkin for $866 million in cash.

But there’s a catch. According to The Financial Times, the purchase is subject to approval from the U.S. Committee on Foreign Investment. In other words, there is a very real chance the acquisition could be blocked. Seeing as The Trump Administration has blocked other attempts of foreign companies to buy US companies, this has the very real possibility of being shot out of the sky very quickly. Thus I would suggest watching this space to see what happens. It won’t take long to see what happens next I assure you.

Next up is the news that Linksys is expanding its Velop, whole home mesh Wi-Fi line to include a Dual-Band offering and new software advancements that enhance performance with Intelligent Mesh technology, security features with advanced parental controls, network traffic monitoring, and web site blocking as well as ease of use with improvements in the Linksys app. Velop is now the most flexible whole home mesh Wi-Fi system on the market. It can be installed in different configurations to support any type of home, is compatible with any ISP modem or gateway, and both Dual-Band and Tri-Band nodes are 100% interoperable and interchangeable.

Linksys Velop Dual Band Hero 3-pack.jpg

Linksys Velop Dual-Band Whole Home Wi-Fi Mesh System

Linksys is expanding its Velop product line to include a Dual-Band modular Wi-Fi system, the world’s first mass-market Flexible Wi-Fi System, (available in 1-pack, 2-pack and 3-pack options) that can be installed in various mesh configurations providing fast and reliable Wi-Fi to the edge of a home network. Velop Dual-Band nodes are designed for performance as well as elegance; they stand about two inches shorter than the Velop Tri-Band solution and small enough to be placed anywhere with a clean and attractive look that appeals to everyone – which is unique to the mesh category of solutions for the home. Each Velop “node” is a powerful Dual-Band AC1300 device that serves as router, range extender, access point, and bridge which provides users the future proof technology they need as they bring new and more devices into the home.

Each node is configured during setup by the accompanying Linksys app (available for iOS and Android), which provides the industry’s simplest and most intuitive setup leveraging Bluetooth to securely communicate between the mobile device and each node. After setup is complete, the Linksys app serves as a powerful Wi-Fi management tool with useful features, such as guest access, parental controls, device prioritization, and insights that help Velop users get maximum performance and utility from their network. Velop helps users get the most out of their broadband subscription by delivering 100% of their speed to the edge of their network.

The Most Complete and Flexible Whole Home Mesh Wi-Fi Solution on the Market

Velop is a union of high performing hardware, intelligent software, simple to use App, and cloud service features. This combination provides users with a solution that will future proof their home network for years to come.

Key highlights include:

  • Powerful Dual-Band – Each Velop node is a Dual-Band AC 2×2 802.11ac Wave 2 with MU-MIMO radio configuration with combined speed up to 1300 Mbps.
  • True Modular Mesh Design – Each node is built to connect with each other over Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet or combination of the two for best performance. They auto configure to connect in multiple different mesh topologies.
  • Intelligent Mesh Technology – The Velop system adapts to a user’s Wi-Fi needs. It self-heals and optimizes to consistently deliver fast, flawless Wi-Fi everywhere in home.
  • Velop Dual-Band and Tri-Band are interoperable – Velop is the most flexible wi-fi system which users can simply select a Velop system based on size of their home, internet connection or smart home readiness. Velop users can use both the Tri-Band and Dual-Band versions on the same network. Adding a Dual-Band node to an existing Tri-Band mesh network is an affordable way to extend coverage. Introducing a Tri-Band node to a Dual-Band mesh network will unlock future-proofed smart home capabilities and improve performance.
  • App-Led Setup – The new Linksys app automatically identifies the nodes to be setup using Bluetooth and creates a secure connection between the mobile device and each node. The app guides users through the installation process using visual animations where needed to clearly explain each step, including the transition from current networking hardware.
  • Patented-Pending Spot Finder Technology – The placement of each node is critical to establish a reliable connection. During setup, Velop will recommend the best placement to reduce latency, maximize throughput and improve range and signal strength.
  • Velop works with Amazon Alexa – Velop includes custom Amazon Alexa “skills” that can turn the guest network on/off and read back the credentials of both the main and guest networks
  • Automatic Updates – Velop is connected to the Linksys cloud service and will automatically monitor for updates and apply new firmware that unlock new features, resolution to security vulnerabilities, and improved performance as they become available. Some Whole Home Wi-Fi systems require manual firmware updates making them vulnerable to security infringements. Users have the option to turn automatic updates off. Also, frequent updates to the Linksys app ensure that the Velop experience will continue to get better over time.
  • Superior Warranty and Support – Velop comes with 3-years warranty and support

Intelligent Mesh and New Software Features Rolling Out To All Velop Users

Linksys is introducing Intelligent Mesh™, an evolution in Home Wi-Fi engineering, that combines Linksys software and hardware to deliver Wi-Fi via the fastest path to the internet for the best experience possible. Intelligent Mesh helps provide better speed at distances, improved client handling between nodes, and dynamic improvements to back-haul to always ensure the best connection to the Internet. Velop Intelligent Mesh is organized into these 4 pillars and works seamlessly and automatically across both Velop Dual-Band an Tri-Band nodes:

  1. Self-Organize: The Velop system is a modular mesh system that support both Wi-Fi and wired back-haul, configures in AP/Bridge mode, works with any ISP modem or gateway and interoperates seamlessly across Dual-Band and Tri-Band nodes.
  2. Self-Optimize: The Velop system continuously calculates the signal strength and speed between nodes to help deliver the best internet connection to your devices. For Example, Velop uses patent pending Spot Finder technology during setup to automatically configure the mesh network optimizing both Wi-Fi channels and bands to provide best performance to each client device
  3. Self-Healing: The Velop system will reconfigure itself if a node goes offline so that the network continues to perform. Also, the Linksys app includes the Channel Finder feature to initiate a new channel scan to avoid interference or crowded wireless signals.
  4. One Network: The Velop system uses one network name, one password, one admin password for a consistent and secure mesh network of multiple nodes. Velop’s guest network will extend to all nodes and changing passwords to stay secure only requires a single update in the Linksys app or web interface.

Linksys is announcing new software features planned for automatic update in 2018:

Linksys is adding new software features in its Intelligent Mesh architecture to enhance the performance of Wi-Fi throughout the home as well as new parental control and security features thru in-app purchases that will add to the overall value of the system.

  • Client Steering by node: (Self-Optimize). Ensures device is connected to the closest node for optimal performance.
  • Backhaul Reconnect and Optimization (Self-Optimize, Self-Configure, Self-Healing). Nodes will reestablish best connection to the Internet in the event one of the nodes fails or joins the network.
  • Parental control improvements including website category content filtering with allow and block overrides
  • Automatic network traffic security monitoring for malware, phishing, and blocking of malicious web sites

Linksys Gaming Software Enhancements to WRT32X

Linksys is adding “Killer” gaming prioritization for any device (computer, mobile phone or console) to the Linksys WRT32X. This means that users gaming on any device will get their gaming prioritized as #1 over all other traffic on the network providing for a better online gaming experience with less lag. We’ve done this by moving the Application level stream detection onboard the router which intelligently and autonomously recognizes the network traffic from devices coming into the router and prioritizes the traffic for a fully dynamic quality of service while gaming, streaming, and surfing – no matter what else is happening on the network. Also included are stylized improvements to the user interface to reflect the new Killer Prioritization Engine, as well as improved network traffic and speed test visualizations. The WRT32X will give gamers the advantage of faster frags and lower ping times! (Software Update is planned for Spring 2018)

Review: Belkin TrueClear Pro Advanced Screen Care

Posted in Products with tags on September 13, 2017 by itnerd

My iPhone 7 Plus has been protected by a Belkin ScreenCare+ Screen Protector. I used it because it cut down on glare. But over the last month, I noticed that it was starting to peel away from the screen. Likely because of all the athletic activities that I do. Thus I needed to get a new one. I decided that my best course of action was to go to the Apple Store and get the Belkin TrueClear Pro Advanced Screen Care screen protector. This is a screen protector made of Corning’s InvisiGlass Ultra. It offers improved scratch resistance, reduced scratch visibility and better drop performance than screen protectors made from tempered glass and plastic. It’s extremely thin and looks like you have nothing on the phone. For those reasons, I decided that this was the screen protector for me.

The key thing about this screen protector is that it is professionally installed at your local Apple Store and it’s cool to watch. I handed my phone over to an Apple Specialist who cleaned my phone of dust, smudges and fingerprints and then watched them put the screen protector. It took minutes and the results were exceptionally good. It looked like I didn’t have a screen protector on as colors looked vibrant and the screen images were sharp. Ditto for the feel of the screen. The screen protector did attracted fingerprints much like the stock screen would. But those were easily cleaned with a tissue. The only issue was that there was glare in bright sunlight, but I will learn to adapt to that.

Total cost was $44.95 CDN and less than ten minutes of my time. Seeing as every smartphone user needs a screen protector, the offerings from Belkin which come with the bonus of professional installation is a great way to go.

Review: Belkin Valet Charge Dock for Apple Watch & iPhone [UPDATED]

Posted in Products with tags on March 30, 2017 by itnerd

Now that I have an Apple Watch, I needed a way to keep it charged. Yes it does come with a charge cable, but it’s one more cable that I really don’t want to have. So I relegated it to my travel bag. Instead, I picked up this from the Apple Store:

IMG_0054

Meet the Belkin Valet Charge Dock for Apple Watch & iPhone which allows you to charge both your iPhone and Apple Watch at the same time. One of the reasons why I went for this is that besides the fact that this is an all-in-one solution, it has this going for it:

IMG_0055

This dial at the back allows you to lower or raise the Lightning connector. Which means that if you use a case on your iPhone, it will still be able to plug in. This solves the number one complaint that I have with most docks which is that I cannot use most of them with my case on the phone. This is a brilliant idea by Belkin. The phone simply plugs into the Lightning port to charge, though I will note that likely because of the case I am using, plugging in requires some degree of precision. The Apple Watch connects via a magnetic charger. While the magnet is strong enough to hold the Apple Watch in place, I recommend that you use the optional watch band support to make sure that it doesn’t fall off.

From a quality standpoint, this dock feels solid and it’s heavy as well. It also feels like a premium product regardless of where you touch it. There is no question in my mind that this will last over the long term. It comes in silver, rose gold, and black for those who want to match the dock to their phone. Gripes? None. Zip. Zero. Nada. As far as I am concerned, Belkin has hit a home run with this product.

The Belkin Valet Charge Dock for Apple Watch & iPhone goes for $144.95 CDN which isn’t cheap. But given the quality and the utility that’s on display here, it’s worth every penny as far as I am concerned. Take a look at it if you want an all-in-one charging solution for your iPhone and Apple Watch.

UPDATE: Since writing this review I have noted that this product does not work with the iPhone XS and XS Max. Presumably it also does not work with the about to be released iPhone XR as well. That is the first time I have ever seen an Apple MFi certified product not work with an Apple product. Users of this product who complain on Twitter have an interaction like this with Belkin’s social media team (who by the way are clearly not native English speakers when you read the following Tweets):

So Belkin is basically saying to buy their new product when it ships in November. And as you will see in a following Tweet, it looks like Belkin is offering a discount of some sort on a compatible dock. And they are kind of implying that their products are made to be future proof, but it doesn’t always work out that way. Which is understandable to a point. I say that because the whole point of the Apple MFi program is to ensure that this sort of situation doesn’t happen. So from an optics perspective alone, this is pretty bad for Belkin as it looks like they dropped the ball here. Whether they actually did or not is a completely different discussion. But consumers will assume that Belkin is at fault. Which is crystal clear that this is happening from looking at what Belkin customers think of this on Twitter:

https://twitter.com/kddog1/status/1047801151708647425

In my case, since I am the owner of a new iPhone XS and a Belkin Valet, I will be replacing the Belkin Valet shortly with something from another company. Which is unfortunate as I have spoken to people at Belkin in the past and they have some really unique product offerings. But to be frank, I am now gunshy about going to the well with Belkin again as I believe that this situation was avoidable and could have been handled much better. And I have to wonder if this will happen again with a future iPhone seeing as far as I can tell, no other company is having, or has a problem like this with a MFi certified product that they make. If that isn’t the case, please correct me.

Review: Belkin ScreenCare+ Screen Protector For The iPhone 7 Plus

Posted in Products with tags on February 22, 2017 by itnerd

I have only had my iPhone 7 Plus for less than a week, but one thing that I wanted to do right out of the gate is protect the screen. On top of that, I am not a fan of glossy screens as I tend to use my phone in the outdoors where glare can become an issue. The thing with screen protectors is that if you do it yourself, you have to clean the screen perfectly and apply it perfectly or it looks terrible. Seeing as this was a brand new phone, I decided to go another route. I decided to get a ScreenCare+ Screen Protector from Belkin which offers professional and perfect installation at your local Apple Store. By that I mean that Belkin has developed a machine that applies the screen protector perfectly every single time. After they clean it of course. So I handed my phone over to an Apple Specalist who cleaned my phone of dust, smudges and fingerprints and then watched them put the screen protector on using the device that’s in the video below:

The result was a perfectly applied screen protector with no air bubbles or dust underneath it. It was pretty impressive to watch and I have zero complaints about the screen protector. Now in my case, I chose the Anti-Glare model as I wanted to protect the screen and mitigate the glare issue. But Belkin also offers and Invisiglass screen protector that offers better shock protection while still being glossy. So you’ve got a couple of choices depending on what your use case is. In my case, the ScreenCare+ Anti-Glare screen protector cost me $24.95 CDN which included installation. That’s a pretty good price to keep your iPhone’s screen in great conditon. If you buy an iPhone at your local Apple Store, you should really consider having them install one of these before you walk out the door. If you’re an existing owner of a iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6s Plus, you should also consider taking a trip to your local Apple Store to get one installed as well.
