According to Juniper Research, the number of smartphone shipments reached almost 200 million in Q1 2013, representing a growth of 30% from Q1 2012. Samsung increased its smartphone market share by shipping an estimated 68 million smartphones and accounting for approximately 34% of all smartphone shipments in the quarter.

Smartphone PR Q1 2013

Samsung increased its smartphone market share by shipping an estimated 68 million smartphones and accounting for approximately 34% of all smartphone shipments in the quarter. Samsung announced a steady pace in sales of the Galaxy SIII, and improved sales of the Note II for the quarter. However, despite profits falling for the first time in a decade for Apple, the Cupertino based company posted better than expected iPhone sales at around 37.4 million, a 7% growth compared to Q1 2012. LG posted its highest ever smartphones sales quarter, shipping 10.3 million in Q1 2013, driven by sales of the Optimus G and Nexus 4.

Here’s what’s coming next in the smartphone wars. Companies such as ZTE, Nokia, Huawei, and even Blackberry should start to make inroads into this marketplace this year as they push to become players in the smartphone space. Thus, you’ll see more lines on this chart and more reason for the big players to defend their turf.

Want To Unlock Your Phone? If You’re In The US, Do It NOW!

Here’s the deal. If you’ve got the need to unlock your phone so that you can port it to another carrier, I’d do it very quickly. That’s because next week unlocking your phone in certain circumstances will be illegal in the US:

In October 2012, the Librarian of Congress, who determines exemptions to a strict anti-hacking law called the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), decided that unlocking mobile phones would no longer be allowed. But the librarian provided a 90-day window during which people could still buy a phone and unlock it. That window closes on January 26.

I can see why there would be those who argue that this is the right thing to do. But I would say that all it does is restrict consumer choice. Oh well. I guess your only option is to get a phone that’s unlocked to begin with. Google for one can help you with that. That of course assumes you can find a Nexus 4.
