Elon Musk May Have To Sell More Tesla Stock To Keep Twitter Alive

Posted in Commentary with tags on August 18, 2024 by itnerd

A new report by Fortune paints a pretty grim picture for Elon Musk and his involvement in Twitter. Thing look pretty dire at Twitter. How dire you ask? How about this:

Musk’s repeated outbursts against advertisers have dried up the main source of revenue for the loss-making company formerly known as Twitter. A recent decision to sue them for heeding his own advice to not buy ads on the platform hasn’t helped. At some point, he will have to provide a fresh infusion of cash to salvage his $44 billion takeover. And that might mean Musk sells Tesla stock to raise the money—hurting anyone who holds the carmaker’s shares.

“I would be expecting something between $1 and $2 billion in stock,” said Bradford Ferguson, president and chief investment officer of asset manager Halter Ferguson Financial, in comments posted to YouTube on Wednesday. This alone could cause the stock to lose between 5% and 10% of its value. “It’s a massive hole they need to plug.”

If you’re a Tesla shareholder, that has to freak you out. After all, Elon has sold Tesla stock at least two times before to finance his shenanigans at Twitter. Here’s the specifics as to why he needs that money:

Ferguson based his assessment on internal second-quarter figures recently obtained by the New York Times. According to this report, X booked $114 million worth of revenue in the U.S., its largest market by far. This represented a 25% drop over the preceding three months and a 53% drop over the year-ago period.

That already sounds bad. But it gets worse. The last publicly available figures prior to Musk’s acquisition, from Q2 of 2022, had revenue at $661 million. After you account for inflation, revenue has actually collapsed by 84%, in today’s dollars.

No one knows how much longer X can survive, since the company doesn’t release financial results. But in November, Musk himself admitted X could face bankruptcy due to the advertiser boycott

So for a guy who loves to pay the game of FAAFO, it’s pretty clear that he’s in the “find out” phase of that. And what’s bad about this is that he’s completely willing to take Tesla, his shareholders and who knows what else down with him.

And I thought that Elon was supposed to be smart.

Bluesky Sees Massive Signups From The UK Because Of Elon Musk’s Stupidity

Posted in Commentary with tags on August 15, 2024 by itnerd

Elon Musk has shot himself in the foot again. This will take a bit of time to explain, so stick with me.

Last month, three girls were murdered in Northern England. That triggered days of far-right rioting which was triggered by online misinformation. And some of that misinformation was amplified by Elon Musk himself. This genius decided to share misleading information with his millions of followers, including one post suggesting civil war was “inevitable” in Britain. That made Prime Minister Keir Starmer react to that and his government rolling out laws to police online content as a result.

The other thing that has happened is this:

It appears that Twitter competitor Bluesky is seeing a significant bump in signups from the United Kingdom since Elon decided to be stupid. The word on the street is that even UK politicians are abandoning Twitter for Bluesky. That’s not a good look for Elon.

Elon really is playing a game that he can’t win. Between this and the EU saying that he has to police misinformation on Twitter, to which Elon responded with a meme from the movie Tropic Thunder, Elon is just asking to get slapped with something that is really going to hurt him. The UK and the EU aren’t going to put up with his antics and are certain to punish him. Or put a more contemporary way, Elon is playing a game of FAAFO. Which is an acronym for F**k Around And Find Out. And one suspects that he’s not going to like the Find Out part of that.

I hope this was worth it Elon. Because right now, you look like a real loser.

Donald Trump “Interviewed” By Elon Musk On Twitter After Musk Sorts Out His Technical Issues

Posted in Commentary with tags , on August 13, 2024 by itnerd

You might remember that Elon Musk tried to organize a launch event for then presidential candidate Ron DeSantis, and that turned into a train wreck next to a dumpster fire from a tech perspective. Well, it’s happened again with current presidential candidate Donald Trump. This “interview”, note the quotes because Elon is really trying to help Trump’s floundering campaign and not ask the tough questions, started about 42 minutes late as evidenced by Tweets like this:

Now I didn’t watch the interview. Because to be frank, there’s zero need for me to do so. But if you want a recap, here’s one option, and here’s another. But back to whatever issues that Elon had getting this interview going. He said it was a cyberattack that caused his tech issues. I call BS on that. What likely happened is that the same issues that Elon had in terms of the platform being able to scale to meet the volume of people who wanted to watch the DeSantis launch reappeared here. Highlighting the fact that if you fire 90% of the people in an organization, and you don’t spend money to be able to deliver services reliability, bad things happen. But I guess it’s better for Elon’s fragile ego to blame a cyberattack rather to admit that his decisions are at the heart of what happened last night.

Regardless, what last night guarantees is that no organization will want to broadcast anything on Twitter because the platform can’t handle it. And you have to wonder if this will affect advertising on Twitter by pushing more advertisers out the door. Time will tell on that front.

Donald Trump Screws His Own Investors By Going Back To Twitter

Posted in Commentary with tags , on August 12, 2024 by itnerd

The stock associated with Trump Media & Technology Group which is the company that owns Truth Social has been in free fall for while now. Evidenced by this:

And chances are that the stock price isn’t going to improve with this Tweet from Donald Trump.

Yes you read that correctly, I said Tweet:

He has since posted six other Tweets today. Including one hyping up the fact that he’s going to be “interviewed” by billionaire narcissist Elon Musk who thinks he’s a journalist all of a sudden. I for one will not be watching this even though it is likely to be a train wreck next to a dumpster fire as Elon’s stunts tend to end up being.

Anyway, seeing as Trump owns Truth Social, posting on a competing social media platform should be something that he should be avoiding as I assume he wants to make money from his own platform. But I’m guessing that this is a desperate attempt to gain back some ground on the Democratic ticket who have been responsible for having his poll numbers crater. But that’s just a guess. What isn’t a guess is that this move is likely to see his stock value tank more than it already has. And make his campaign more of a farce than it already is.

Elon Musk Decides To Sue Advertisers Who Had The Audacity To Avoid Twitter Because Of How Toxic It Is

Posted in Commentary with tags on August 6, 2024 by itnerd

A reader pointed me towards this Tweet from Twitter sock puppet for Elon CEO Linda Yaccarino which is firmly in the realm of mind blowing:

Here’s what the actual Tweet says:

Every day, hundreds of millions of people come to X to be part of the only global, real-time conversation. They come to share their thoughts and hear others. To share their content and see more. To debate and be debated. To entertain and be entertained. To inspire and be inspired. There is no substitute for X.

The power of this community to bring global conversations to life was the reason I was so excited to join X as CEO in June 2023.

After a career in media and advertising, I thought I had seen everything. Then I read the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee’s report entitled “GARM’s (Global Alliance for Responsible Media) Harm” last month. The report disclosed that their investigation had found evidence of an illegal boycott against many companies, including X. As their report found: “Evidence obtained by the Committee shows that GARM and its members directly organized boycotts and used other indirect tactics to target disfavored platforms, content creators, and news organizations in an effort to demonetize and, in effect, limit certain choices for consumers.”

The consequence – perhaps the intent – of this boycott was to seek to deprive X’s users, be they sports fans, gamers, journalists, activists, parents or political and corporate leaders, of the Global Town Square.

To put it simply, people are hurt when the marketplace of ideas is undermined and some viewpoints are not funded over others as part of an illegal boycott.

This behavior is a stain on a great industry, and cannot be allowed to continue.

That is why, today, X has filed an antitrust lawsuit against the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM), the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA), and GARM members CVS Health, Mars, Orsted and Unilever. This is not a decision we took lightly, but it is a direct consequence of their actions.

The illegal behavior of these organizations and their executives cost X billions of dollars.

Since arriving at X, I made it my mission to continue to build a platform where people, brands and advertisers can thrive in our unique, dynamic and safe environment.

And because of this commitment to our users, even despite the boycott, usage has reached all time highs. Using a Twitter legacy metric, user active minutes, in August 2022, people spent 7.2 billion active minutes on the platform. Today, that number is more than 9 billion, a 25% increase.

The same is true for video – even compared to last year, daily video views are up 45% to 8.2 billion. X is innovating and growing.

We have met and surpassed the requests made by advertisers and groups such as GARM for new tools, both to improve advertiser controls and the effectiveness of our products to drive increased value for our customers.

We have proven our platform provides advertisers a way to showcase their brands and reach their target audiences safely, efficiently and effectively. That’s why I’ve worked in good faith with marketers across the globe to showcase our innovations and allay any concerns with brands whom I’ve partnered with for decades. The unfortunate reality is that despite all our efforts, hundreds of meetings and research to the contrary, many companies chose to dismiss the facts.

To those who broke the law, we say enough is enough. We are compelled to seek justice for the harm that has been done by these and potentially additional defendants, depending what the legal process reveals.

It’s also clear that there are likely others who suffered at the hands of this activity. This case is about more than damages – we have to fix a broken ecosystem that allows this illegal activity to occur.

We will continue to innovate and ensure X has a vibrant future while the courts will hold accountable those who engaged in illegal behavior.

To all of you who have been part of the transformative journey we are on, thank you. Rest assured, we will not stop defending our global town square.

Linda

This was retweeted by Elon Musk, along with this:

Now let me add some context here, because context is important:

  • The committee that is being referred to in this lawsuit is led by Republicans on Capitol Hill. Given Elon and Linda’s right wing leanings, along with the fact that Twitter has gone toward the right since Elon took over, that’s enough to make one say “hmmmmm…”
  • The lawsuit’s allegations appear to canter on the early days of Musk’s Twitter takeover and not a more recent dispute with advertisers that came a year later which caused advertisers to flee the platform en masse.

This really seems to me to be a “Hail Mary” of sorts from Elon. As in he’s sending a message to say that if you don’t back him and his toxic platform, he’ll sue you. Which in turn should make it clear what the response of anyone who is still advertising on that platform should be. Which is that you should flee the platform now. Don’t wait for this case to play out in court. Leave now. By extension, if you as an individual happen to still be on Twitter, you should leave as well. Elon needs eyeballs to make money, and if you don’t consume the content on Twitter, you deprive him of money. Because to be frank, Elon and his sock puppet CEO Linda have lost the plot here. And there is zero reason why they need to be accommodated any longer.

Elon Musk Is Taking Your Twitter Data To Train Grok…. By Default And Without Telling Anyone

Posted in Commentary with tags on July 26, 2024 by itnerd

Elon Musk continues to do things that reinforce his status as a grade A scumbag. His latest brainwave is to take the data of those who for whatever reason are still use Twitter and use it to train his AI known as Grok by default. What’s worse is that he didn’t tell anyone about this. It was discovered by a Twitter user:

If you for whatever reason are still using Twitter. You should log onto the Twitter web interface and immediately disable this setting. Responsible companies allow users to opt into this sort of stuff. But Elon doesn’t run his companies in a responsible manner. Thus I am not surprised that you are not only forced to opt out of this, and that he did this under the cover of darkness. Once you turn this off, I would then strongly suggest that you spread this far and wide not only to show what sort of person that Elon is, but to deprive Grok of the training data that clearly he is so desperate for, that he would pull a stunt like this.

Elon Musk Is Slowly Walking Away From Telling Advertisers To “Go F**k Yourselves”

Posted in Commentary with tags on June 22, 2024 by itnerd

Remember when Elon Musk told advertisers to “go f**k yourselves” when said advertisers decided to stop advertising on Twitter? If not, this will help. Well I am going to go out on a limb and suggest that this is making Elon hurt. Specifically in the bank account. Which is why Elon has been in Cannes this week to walk this back:

Elon Musk on Wednesday tried to walk back remarks lashing out at advertisers fleeing his X social media platform.

At the Cannes Lions advertising festival in Cannes, France, Musk was asked by WPP CEO Mark Read what he meant by telling advertisers threatening to pull ads from the platform late last year to “go f— yourself.”

Musk said it was meant as a general point on free speech rather than a comment to the wider advertising industry.

“It wasn’t to advertisers as a whole,” Musk said. “It was with respect to freedom of speech, I think it is important to have a global free speech platform, where people from a wider range of opinions can voice their views.”

“In some cases, there were advertisers who were insisting on censorship,” Musk said. “At the end of the day … if we have to make a choice between censorship and losing money, [or] censorship and money, or free speech and losing money, we’re going to choose the second.”

“We’re going to support free speech rather than agree to be censored for money which I think is the right moral decision,” he added.

The fact is that Elon is scrambling for cash because real advertisers have been replaced by porn and AliExpress ads. Clearly advertisers that pay Twitter’s bills are not coming back and he’s trying to thread the needle so to speak between getting those advertisers back while keeping his Nazi, racist, homophobic, and other scumbag friends happy. All to get money into his bank account. I am hoping that advertisers don’t fall for this and continue to avoid Twitter because Elon needs to pay for his behaviour. Literally.

For The Second Day In A Row, Elon Musk Gets Trolled On Twitter

Posted in Commentary with tags on June 13, 2024 by itnerd

Hot on the heels of Elon Musk getting community noted and trolled on Twitter over his rants about the Apple Intelligence/OpenAI partnership, he’s getting trolled again on Twitter. This time it’s about hiding likes so that you can’t see what Twitter posts a particular user liked. I wrote about this here. Well that went into effect in the last 24 hours or so. And the backlash is epic.

You have to believe that in some corner of a Tesla or Twitter office, Elon must bewildered by this response. But to be frank, you can’t be surprised that this is happening. Elon has once again done something that has opened himself up to this sort of response. And most normal people after the first or maybe second time that this happens to them would reconsider their life choices and course correct. But Elon isn’t normal and seems to relish this attention. Why I don’t know because I’m a computer nerd and not a mental health professional. But I will be curious to see if and how Elon reacts to this because that will be interesting to watch.

Twitter Is Now Officially Home To Porn

Posted in Commentary with tags on June 4, 2024 by itnerd

TechCrunch has spotted that Twitter has updated their terms of service to now allow porn until the platform:

Over the weekend, X added clauses to its rules, formally allowing users to post adult and graphic content on the platform — with a few caveats. Users can now post consensually produced NSFW content as long as it is prominently labeled as such. The new rules also cover AI-generated videos and images.

The tweak to the rules is not a complete surprise, since X, under Elon Musk, has already experimented with formally hosting adult content with NSFW communities.

“We believe that users should be able to create, distribute, and consume material related to sexual themes as long as it is consensually produced and distributed. Sexual expression, visual or written, can be a legitimate form of artistic expression,” X’s page on “adult content” policies reads.

“We believe in the autonomy of adults to engage with and create content that reflects their own beliefs, desires, and experiences, including those related to sexuality. We balance this freedom by restricting exposure to Adult Content for children or adult users who choose not to see it,” the page reads.

My guess in terms of Twitter making this move is that Elon Musk is now going to use porn as a revenue source. Seeing as Twitter is now a private company, we don’t know how much Elon is hurting for cash. But seeing as he’s let racists, insurrectionists, and other low life scumbags back onto Twitter in a seemingly desperate attempt to make a few bucks, it’s not a shock that he’s letting porn officially onto Twitter. At least not to me.

Good luck with that Elon.

Elon Musk Has Decided To Make “Likes” Private On Twitter And Remove Likes Tab From Profiles

Posted in Commentary with tags on May 23, 2024 by itnerd

From the “this is a very cynical move” department comes this move to make “likes” private on Twitter and outright remove likes tab from profiles. This was confirmed in this Tweet:

Haofei Wang is director of engineering over at Twitter. At least until Elon decides to fire him on a whim. In any case, since he is in a position to know, this move can be taken as fact. The question is why is this happening. From where I sit, this means that Twitter which under Elon has become a cesspool of hate and other evil things has less accountability than it did before this move. Now with this move, the hate mongers, racists, and conspiracy theorists among others can fly under the radar without fear of being called out for liking a Tweet that is vile and unacceptable in a civil society. Which is likely what Elon wants seeing as he’s all for those sorts of people. The other side effect is that it will make it harder for brands to avoid having their ads next to content that they don’t like. I’m sure that that part will be marketed by Elon as “See there’s no issues here. Come back and advertise.” Which to be clear, no brand should be advertising on Twitter. And this move underscores why that’s the case.
