The research team at vpnMentor, explored the most notorious corporate scams of the last 25 years, which includes names like Lehman Brothers, FTX, Boeing, PayPal, Google AdSense, and examine who fell, who endured, and who managed to profit despite their wrongdoing.

Key findings at a glance:

  • Over a quarter (29.3%) of the companies involved in big corporate scandals belong to the Finance and Banking sector.
  • The majority of the analyzed companies (70.7%) faced some reputational and financial damage but continued operations after the scandal.
  • 85% of the publicly traded companies that continued operations had their lowest stock price as a direct result of the scandal coming to light.
  • PayPal, Google, and JPMorgan Chase seemingly faced no significant repercussions for their unethical actions, continuing to make large profits when the scandals broke out.

Ultimately, these scandals serve as reminders of the importance of transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership in business. They underscore that while some may profit in the short term, the long-term costs of dishonesty often outweigh any gains.

Thousands of DeepFake Images Exposed by AI Company

VPNMentor has just published a report about a major data breach affecting GenNomis by AI-NOMIS — an AI company based in South Korea that provides face swapping and “Nudify” adult content as well as a marketplace where images can be bought or sold.

Cybersecurity researcher Jeremiah Fowler discovered the non-password-protected database. It contained 93,485 images and .Json files with a total size of 47.8 GB including explicit AI-generated content, face-swapped images, and disturbing portrayals of very young individuals. The breach raises serious concerns about non-consensual deepfake content, harassment, and potentially illegal images.

ComfyUI Users Targeted by Malicious Custom Node

The vpnMentor research team recently discovered an incident involving the popular stable diffusion user interface, ComfyUI, potentially putting at risk users who used a specific user-uploaded node. The custom node was reviewed by the vpnMentor team and the findings were confirmed. 

This malicious code inserted in the “ComfyUI_LLMVISION” node is disguised as a helpful extension but is really designed to steal sensitive user information, including browser passwords, credit card details, and browsing history to later transmit the stolen data to a Discord server controlled by the attacker, posing direct privacy risks and many online threats to their users.

School Safety Software Database Exposed In Major Data Breach

Over 4 Million records belonging to Raptor Technologies, a US school safety software provider, were exposed according to cybersecurity researcher Jeremiah Fowler, putting students, parents and staff from different schools at risk of many online threats. 

The key findings are the following: 

  • 4,024,001 records totalling 827GB; 
  • Documents that revealed students, parents and school staff PIIs, along with school incident response plans, infrastructure challenges, and much more; 
  • Documents regarding at-risk students, detailing their personal and medical conditions.

McGraw Hill Users’ Data Discovered On Hackers’ Forum By VPNMentor

Over Half Million Records of Irish National Police Exposed

Cybersecurity researcher Jeremiah Fowler, discovered and reported to vpnMentor an unprotected database belonging to the Irish National Police Database of automobile seizures containing over 500K records exposing sensitive documents such as scanned identification documents revealing personally identifiable information belonging to car owners, spreadsheets and monthly reports revealing vehicle and registration information, names of vehicle owners and more.
