The Zune Is Dead…. Wait, Did Anyone Actually Buy One?

Posted in Commentary with tags , on March 14, 2011 by itnerd

The much maligned Microsoft Zune is apparently dead. Here’s what they plan to do instead:

Microsoft will concentrate on putting Zune software onto mobile phones, such as those running its Windows operating system, said the person, who declined to be identified because the decision hasn’t been announced. Zune software lets customers buy songs and movies, as well as pay a monthly fee to stream unlimited music.

Microsoft denies this of course. But the death of the Zune is long overdue. I only know one person who bought one. And I’m guessing that for every person who bought a Zune, a thousand or more bought iPods. That’s not a great business model if you’re Microsoft. It will be interesting to see if what they come up with next. Hopefully it’s more successful than the Zune.

Microsoft Announces Zune HD To Go After iPod Touch…..Good Luck With That

Posted in Commentary with tags , on May 26, 2009 by itnerd

I guess that Microsoft is sick of having the iPod own the digital music player market. So in response, they’ve announced the Zune HD. News.com has the details:

The Zune HD, which will be available in the U.S. only starting this fall, features an HD Radio tuner as well as an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) touch screen, Microsoft said. It is based on Windows CE and will use a version of Internet Explorer customized for its touch screen, Microsoft said.

You can also look at the Microsoft press release which mentions integration with Xbox Live as well as easy hook up to a TV using a HDMI cable.

Microsoft really thinks that this can give the iPod touch a run for it’s money. But I disagree. I’ll give Microsoft points for using an OLED screen, but my praise ends there. Most of the other details are kind of sketchy (capacity being the most glaring), so you have to wonder how Microsoft will fill in those blanks. And what’s the deal with the radio? I don’t need it, and I doubt that anybody else does either.

In any case, welcome to the party MS. Nice to see you are late as usual.

Zune Sales Crash And Burn…. Sucks To Be Microsoft

Posted in Commentary with tags , on January 27, 2009 by itnerd

I’m guessing that the people in Microsoft’s Zune group are mass e-mailing their CV’s around at the moment. Because accoring to Microsoft’s latest 10-Q filing “Zune platform revenue decreased $100 million or 54% reflecting a decrease in device sales.” This is happening as iPod sales continue to increase… despite the fact that everyone plus dog has one already. The numbers given by Apple in their quarterly statements indicate that they sold over 22 million units last quarter. That’s just 3% higher when compared to the same period last year, but any increase is better than the free fall that the folks in Redmond are dealing with.

Perhaps Microsoft should come to the conclusion that the Zune isn’t going to beat the iPod and just cut their losses now?

Seeing As The Zune Has Had Major Issues Lately….

… I thought it would be a good time to bring out this video clip from the hit TV series “Chuck.”

As an aside. “Chuck” is a must watch for any self respecting geek or nerd.

30GB Zunes Failing Everywhere All At The Same Time…. iPod Owners Laugh [UPDATED x2]

Posted in Commentary with tags on December 31, 2008 by itnerd

Here’s something from the Twilight Zone. Reports are coming in from all over (click here and here and here for examples from the tech blogasphere and here and here and here from the keyboards of users) that 30GB Zunes have started to fail simultaneously. Apparently the symptoms are that the Zunes started to freeze at about midnight last night and become totally unresponsive. Some Zune owners have apparently dubbed this “Z2K9” as it is their version of “Y2K.”

I suspect that some Zune owners may head to The Temple Of Steve Jobs Apple Store for an iPod if Ballmer and company can’t fix this quickly. Others may simply file a lawsuit.

Sucks to be Microsoft right about now.

UPDATE: Microsoft has updated the Zune website saying that they’re working on correcting the problem. That inspires some confidence.

UPDATE #2: According to this post, the problem is the Zune 3.1 firmware which has a bug in the date and time. The post walks you through resetting the device which blows away the firmware and gets it working again. I’m guessing that Microsoft is hard at work readying a new firmware update as we speak.

UPDATE #3: A new statement from Microsoft has been posted. Here’s the key message:

  1. Disconnect your Zune from USB and AC power sources.
  2. Because the player is frozen, its battery will drain—this is good. Wait until the battery is empty and the screen goes black. If the battery was fully charged, this might take a couple of hours.
  3. Wait until after noon GMT on January 1, 2009 (that’s 7 a.m. Eastern or 4 a.m. Pacific time).
  4. Connect your Zune to either a USB port on the back or your computer or to AC power using the Zune AC Adapter and let it charge.

Once the battery has sufficient power, the player should start normally. No other action is required—you can go back to using your Zune!
