In The Dragon Hunters, a dragon swoops out of the sky and dog-naps Flynn and Paddy’s beloved lab, Coco. The brothers know it’s up to them to bring her home, so they pack their bags and set off on an epic adventure.
The Dragon Brothers trilogy was originally published in New Zealand and sold more than 30,000 copies. The author, James Russell, is a journalist and lives in Auckland. The illustrator, Link Choi, helps create the look of films, such as the Hobbit trilogy, and the Netflix series Marco Polo.
James and Link wrote and illustrated the entire series before adding the augmented reality. Once the books were published, James and Link saw how much kids were reacting to the maps on the endpapers of each book and decided to take them digital by adding augmented reality content.
To see the maps come alive is quite simple—download the free AR Reads app on your Android or iOS compatible smartphone or tablet, launch the app, and hover your device over the map. Users will be able to explore Flynn and Paddy’s world—see and hear dragons fly, geysers gush, and get a glimpse of their favorite characters in action.

The AR Reads app enhances the magic of the Dragon Brothers trilogy, but at its heart, the series is a highly engaging and entertaining story that kids and parents will love, with or without the digital component.
