iTunes Music Store Back In China…. Minus Tibet LP

Posted in Commentary with tags , , on August 26, 2008 by itnerd

Here’s the good news: Those in China can now get the iTunes Music Store again.

Here’s the bad news: You can’t get that Tibet LP (iTunes link). But at least we know why they blocked it:

“An article on China.org.cn, a new Web site operated by the Chinese government’s Internet Information Center, said “Songs for Tibet” had “ignited strong indignation” among Chinese Web users. Some users said they would boycott Apple products, including the popular iPhone, which is so far unavailable in China, the article said.”

The moral of the story: China doesn’t like freedom of speech and those who speak up for those who can’t. Too bad.

P.S. Buy the album and support freedom of speech.

iTunes Store Blocked In China… Could Tibet Album Be The Reason?

Posted in Commentary with tags , , on August 22, 2008 by itnerd

Following up on my story about Chinese censorship at the Olympics comes the news that the iTunes store is being blocked in China. The word on the street is that it’s being blocked because of an album called Songs for Tibet [iTunes link], which is a compilation of music by Sting, Alanis Morissette, Garbage and others, plus a 15-minute lecture by the Dalai Lama.

This is a dumb move by China. Perhaps people inside China won’t be able to buy this album. But thanks to their stupidity attempt at censorship, Apple is guarnteed to sell a lot of copies of this album outside China.

This whole thing reminds me of a line from a Who song: “Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.” But in China’s case it’s “Meet the new China. Same as the old China.”

P.S. Buy the album and support freedom of speech.

China Keeps Olympic Athletes From Blogging…. WTF?

Posted in Commentary with tags , , , on August 19, 2008 by itnerd

I was under the impression that China had committed to making sure that there was open media access during the games along with open web access to media and athletes? Clearly China hasn’t lived up to that promise as evidenced by blocking  the media from seeing some websites as well as keeping athletes from blogging. In regards to the latter, I present exhibit “A” which is a CBC news story (Video: Requires Windows Media Player) that describes how athletes who simply want to blog about their Olympic experience are being blocked from doing so. Keep in mind they aren’t trying to start trouble, they simply want to share their experiences with the world.

Now I for one have stayed up to watch many of the Olympic events and I’ve been thrilled by the exploits of athletes like Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt. So from a sporting perspective, the games have been a success. But this just sickens me. It’s clear that the Chinese mislead if not outright lied to the IOC for no other purpose than to get the games. Hopefully, the world is watching this and does the right thing. Which is to NEVER give China another major event like the Olympics.

Of course, this posting is guarnteed to get my blog blocked by “The Great Firewall Of China” the instant I push the Publish button, but I don’t care. It is more important to me to use this platform to point out the things that are wrong with the universe. This is most certainly one of them.

Microsoft Bans Xbox Live User For Using His Own Name… WTF?

Posted in Commentary with tags , , , on May 21, 2008 by itnerd

Microsoft has recently been trying to play censor make Xbox Live safer for everyone by making sure that Gamertags contain no sexual innuendo (among other things, click here for the full list). That’s fine in theory, but real life tends to be different. An example of this is the story of a user who got banned for using his name as a Gamertag. His name happens to be Richard Gaywood and he used his name as his Gamertag which promptly got him banned (check this link for proof) . Ignoring the fact that Dick must have really been the subject of much ridicule in school, this is totally stupid. This isn’t the first time that they’ve done this by the way. They’ve gone after the Gamertag of someone calling himself “theGAYERGamer” (who just happened to be gay) which attracted the attention of Gay and Lesbian groups, and not in a nice way.

Microsoft really needs to get a clue here. I’m all for trying to stop racist, sexist, and homophobic content from ending up on Xbox Live (or anywhere else for that matter). But for crying out loud, use some common sense! If Microsoft isn’t careful, they’re going to get pwned by every Gay and Lesbian positve group out there. Or perhaps ticked off users will start using PS3s and Wiis instead.
