Dell Launches New Gaming Gear

Today, Dell announced updates to the range of gaming laptops, monitors and peripherals which are slated for release this year. Here’s the highlights:

Dell G7 Laptop

Dell is introducing the new G7 15/17, a powerful gaming laptop that stands out with its own sophisticated style that can easily go from classroom to gaming.

Completely redesigned – with a slim design, powerful performance and value-added features like customizable chassis light – the new G7 touts significant all-around improvements over the previous gen for on-the-go gaming. As we struggle to squeeze into our swimsuits this summer, the G7 15 is a step ahead, dropping by 4mm to a svetle 20.5mm at the hinge, thanks to the innovative hinge design and the black anodized, all-metal chassis construction. The same for its elegant narrow bezel display, going from 9.9mm to 6.5mm on G7 15 and 8.16mm on the 17-inch.

Dell Technologies Cloud & Google Cloud Launch Hybrid Storage Solution

Dell Technologies and Google Cloud launch Dell Technologies Cloud OneFS for Google Cloudto help organizations control exponential data and application growth and ease the flow of files across their private clouds and Google Cloud.

Dell also is reducing the barrier of entry and improving overall capabilities for hybrid cloud deployments with additional Dell Technologies Cloud advancements. Customers now can move workloads across public and private clouds with greater flexibility and adopt a hybrid cloud approach that best fits their needs while reducing costs. According to Forrester, customers using Dell Technologies Cloud over the course of three years could see an incremental return on investment of more than 170% and recoup their costs in fewer than six months1.

Dell Technologies Cloud and Google Cloud deliver hybrid cloud for file storage

OneFS for Google Cloud delivers a native cloud experience that combines the scalability and performance of scale-out network-attached storage from the industry’s number one provider of storage systems, Dell Technologies2, with Google Cloud’s analytics and compute services.Now, companies can easily move and access high performance computing and demanding workloads, as large as 50 petabytes, in a single filesystem between on-premises Dell EMC Isilon filesystems and Google Cloud without having to make changes or adjustments to their applications.

According to a recent report from Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG), while file data often accounts for at least half of an organization’s on-premises data, very little of it is stored in public clouds, primarily due to performance and scale limitations3. Take the media and entertainment industry, for example. Video files with 4K resolution demand terabytes of storage and require high throughput and low latency file storage, which makes it challenging for production companies to manage large file workloads in public clouds. But, now with OneFS for Google Cloud, they can easily work across private and public clouds with consistent operations and have the flexibility to scale as needed.

Dell Technologies is announcing Enterprise SONiC Distribution by Dell Technologies, a new set of fully supported open source networking solutions that help enterprises modernize and simplify the operations and management of their data centers at scale.

As organizations increasingly rely on modern hybrid cloud models to do business, the historically monolithic and proprietary approach to networking has created inefficiencies and unneeded complexity. Dell Introduces Enhanced PC Security For Today’s Remote Workers

It has been reported that there has been a spike in the number of cybercrime incidents linked to the COVID-19 outbreak. Now more than ever, organizations need to protect their remote workers starting with the devices they use to get their jobs done. 

One area attackers will target is the PC BIOS, the core system built deep inside the PC that controls critical operations like booting the PC and ensuring a secure configuration. To protect against BIOS attacks, organizations need built-in security solutions to protect endpoints. In response, Dell Technologies is introducing Dell SafeBIOS Events & Indicators of Attack (IoA) to further protect our commercial PCs, which are already the most secure in the industry. SafeBIOS Events & IoA uses behavior-based threat detection, at the BIOS level, to detect advanced endpoint threats.

Dell Mobile Connect Adds New Features for iOS & Android

Dell is launching new features for its award-winning PC to smartphone integration software, Dell Mobile Connect, now available from the Microsoft Store. Originally announced at CES 2020, these awaited updates are designed to enable new capabilities for both, Android and iPhone users.

Here’s what’s new at a glance:

  • Added file transfer capability on iOS (iOS 11+)
  • Added full mirroring capability for iOS (iOS 11+)
  • Added MMS capability for Android phones (Android 6+)
  • Compatible with Dell XPS, Inspiron, Vostro, Alienware and G Series PCs purchased after January 2018

Dell Study Finds Data Is At Risk Despite Investments In Data Protection

The Dell Technologies Global Data Protection Index 2020 Snapshot reveals that organizations on average are managing almost 40% more data than they were a year ago. With this surge in data comes inherent challenges. The vast majority (81%) of respondents reported their current data protection solutions will not meet all of their future business needs. The Snapshot, a follow-on to the biennial Global Data Protection Index, surveyed 1,000 IT decision makers across 15 countries at public and private organizations with 250+ employees about the impact these challenges and advanced technologies have on data protection readiness. The findings also show positive progress as an increasing number of organizations – 80% in 2019, up from 74% in 2018 – see their data as valuable and are currently extracting value or plan to in the future.

Costly disruptions rise at alarming rates

According to the study, organizations are now managing 13.53 petabytes (PB) of data, nearly a 40% increase since the average 9.70PB in 2018, and an 831% increase since organizations were managing 1.45PB in 2016. The largest threat to all this data seems to be the growing number of disruptive events, from cyber-attacks to data loss to systems downtime. The majority of organizations (82% in 2019 compared to 76% in 2018) suffered a disruptive event in the last 12 months. And, an additional 68% fear their organization will experience a disruptive event in the next 12 months.

Even more concerning is the finding that organizations using more than one data protection vendor are approximately two times more vulnerable to a cyber incident that prevents access to their data (39% of those using two or more vendors versus 20% of those using only one vendor). But, the use of multiple data protection vendors is on the rise with 80% of organizations choosing to deploy data protection solutions from two or more providers, up 20 percentage points since 2016.

The cost of disruption is also increasing at an alarming rate. The average cost of downtime surged by 54% from 2018 to 2019, resulting in an estimated total cost of $810,018 in 2019, up from $526,845 in 2018. The estimated cost of data loss also increased from $995,613 in 2018 to $1,013,075 in 2019. These costs are significantly higher for those organizations using more than one data protection vendor – nearly two times higher downtime-related costs and almost five times higher data loss costs, on average.

Emerging technologies challenge data protection solutions

As emerging technologies continue to advance and shape the digital landscape, organizations are learning how to use these technologies for better business outcomes. The study reports that almost all organizations are making some level of investment in newer or emerging technologies, with the top five being: cloud-native applications (58%); artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) (53%); software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications (51%); 5G and cloud edge infrastructure (49%); and Internet of Things/end point (36%).

Yet, nearly three-quarters (71%) of respondents believe these emerging technologies create more data protection complexity while 61% state that emerging technologies pose a risk to data protection. More than half of those using newer or emerging technologies are struggling to find adequate data protection solutions for these technologies, including:

  • 5G and cloud edge infrastructure (67%)
  • AI and ML platforms (64%)
  • Cloud-native applications (60%)
  • IoT and end point (59%)
  • Robotic process automation (56%)

The study also found that 81% of respondents believe their organizations’ existing data protection solutions will not be able to meet all future business challenges. Respondents shared a lack of confidence in the following areas:

  • Recovering data from cyber-attacks (69%)
  • Recovering data from a data loss incident (64%)
  • Meeting compliance with regional data governance regulations (62%)
  • Meeting backup and recovery service level objectives (62%)

Data protection joins forces with cloud

Businesses are taking a combination of cloud approaches when deploying new business applications and protecting workloads such as containers and cloud-native and SaaS applications. The findings show that organizations prefer public cloud/SaaS (43%), hybrid cloud (42%) and private cloud (39%) as deployment environments for newer applications such as these. Also, 85% of organizations surveyed say it is mandatory or extremely important for data protection providers to protect cloud-native applications.

As more data moves to, through and around edge environments, many respondents say cloud-based backups are preferred, with 62% citing private cloud and 49% citing public cloud as their approach for managing and protecting data created in edge locations.

Dell Technologies commissioned Vanson Bourne for the Global Data Protection Index 2020 Snapshot, a follow-on to the biennial Global Data Protection Index conducted in 2014, 2016 and 2018. The Snapshot surveyed 1,000 IT decision makers across 15 countries and 14 industries with 250+ employees to understand the impact of cloud and the complexities of advanced technologies on data protection readiness. Vanson Bourne conducted the survey between November and December 2019. The countries surveyed include US, UK, France, Germany and China with 100 respondents each, and Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, UAE, Italy, Australia, Japan, South Korea, India and Singapore with 50 respondents each.

 

Dell Technologies Publishes Study On Managing Disparate Cloud Environments

Today, Dell Technologies shared insights regarding a recent study, Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG), in partnership with Dell Technologies, VMware and Intel, that examines how organizations are managing disparate cloud environments. The global survey of 1,257 IT decision makers found that:

  • 80% of respondents say they see strong value in hybrid cloud. Yet only 5% say they have achieved their goals of having a consistent hybrid cloud.
  • Surveyed orgs say they expect consistent IT management tools for private and public cloud to cut costs 19% on average.
  • When asked about the prospect of using consistent infrastructure management tools across private and public cloud locations, [respondents said] they would expect to reduce the number of security breaches, application outages, or other events affecting its public cloud-resident data by 30%, on average.

Dell Technologies Innovates To Help Customers Realize Competitive Insights

As an example, the system delivers the performance, availability and security required for telecommunications customers building out edge networks critical for the implementation of 5G.

The Dell EMC PowerEdge XE2420 provides a low-latency, two-socket system with the flexibility to add up to four accelerators and 92TB of storage per server to handle growing business application demands as well as analytics. Designed for tough environments, it has Network Equipment-Building System certification with extended operating temperature tolerance and an optional filtered bezel for dusty locations. Front-accessible input/output and power provide easy access for field serviceability.

 

Dell EMC Modular Data Center Micro 415 brings the data center to far-reaching and rugged environments

Designed to customers’ specific requirements, this new, smaller Dell EMC Modular Data Center Micro 415 (MDC Micro) offers pre-integrated, enterprise-level data center IT, power, cooling and remote management in a size shorter and narrower than a parking spot. This helps enable customers to deploy a complete data center to what would otherwise be considered non-data center locations, such as the base of a telecommunications cell tower. The MDC Micro provides enhanced physical protection for IT equipment at the edge with extreme temperature-resistant enclosures, key lock doors and option for smoke detection and fire suppression.

 

Dell EMC iDRAC9 Datacenter software brings remote access for a uniform, more secure server management experience from the edge to the core to the cloud

The new Dell Remote Access Controller, iDRAC 9 Datacenter, embedded management technology adds streaming data analytics capabilities critical for understanding edge operations to all Dell EMC PowerEdge servers. iDRAC 9 Datacenter helps customers meet the requirements for deploying, securing and operating edge environments. Its remote deployment capability can reduce administrator-attended time by up to 99.1% per server after initial setup compared to manual deployment. With streaming telemetry on iDRAC9, customers can discover trends, fine tune operations, and create predictive analytics to help ensure peak performance, reduce downtime and prevent risk.

New, simplified automated certificate enablement is designed to provide zero-touch security at the edge and in central locations. With up to 20 new metric reports providing nearly 2.9 million data points per server, customers’ IT departments can leverage AI operations to develop custom routines based on the specific data they want to analyze for one, or all, iDRAC9 enabled systems wherever they’re deployed.

 

Dell EMC Streaming Data Platform stores and analyzes edge data

The new Dell EMC Streaming Data Platform allows for ingestion and analysis of streaming data from the edge. Customers may now simplify infrastructure management to help harvest critical business insights and focus on new opportunities to improve their data infrastructure.

This enterprise-ready platform delivers a single solution for all customers’ data (whether streaming or not) that provides auto-scaling ingestion, tiered storage with historical recall on-demand and unified analytics for both real-time and historical business insights.

 

Availability

  • The Dell EMC PowerEdge XE2420 will begin initial availability in the second quarter of 2020
  • The Dell EMC Modular Data Center Micro is expected to be available beginning in the second half of 2020
  • The Dell EMC iDRAC9 Datacenter and the Dell EMC Streaming Data Platform are available globally today
